What terms apply in the gap between the end of a fixed term contract and signing new one?

Hope someone can help me.
My one year fixed term contract expired on 4 Sept 2024. I was given verbal assurance about a new contract including pay etc. I was even provided with an interim contract to review (unsigned). Today that interim contract has changed very very significantly (think 50% less pay) and so I would like to leave and find something else. My initial fixed term contract allowed for a notice period of one week. Would this still be the case in the absence of any other contract?
Thanks so much for your help. It has blindsided me a bit.

So your contract expired on the 4th.
You were given an interim contract to review
You were given another contract which was different to the agreements made on the interim contact

Is that what you're saying?

@Howdull yes. I interviewed for a new position in the same organisation in July. Verbal agreement that I was successful. CEO told me about salary, all very cordial. Nothing during August (it's in a private school) despite lots and lots of emails and phone calls. Then last week and interim contract. Today very very different contract. Very frosty. Nothing has changed that I can think of.

In that case I'd say you weren't contractually obliged to give a weeks notice.

@Howdull that would be ideal. I just worried in case the terms are assumed to run over.
