Dealing with Mental Health issues at work

Hi all,

I would really appreciate some perspective, please. I am a mid-level manager in a large corporation with 6 direct reports. I have been with the company for ~8 years but due to natural attrition, particularly following the company's "return to work" policy since the pandemic, my team composition has changed over time. As a result, I now find myself working with both direct reports and a line manager who are proving to be quite challenging to work with. Most of them have shared their struggles with mental health, while others seem to be dealing with undisclosed issues of a similar nature.

Recently, I have been finding it increasingly difficult and stressful to navigate the highs and lows of these situations. Despite my efforts to empathise and accommodate where possible, the strain is becoming overwhelming, to the extent that I am contemplating resigning.

I've been searching online to see if there is any help out there for managers dealing with similar challenges but the available resources focus on supporting individuals with mental health challenges with very little guidance specifically tailored to managers coping with such issues.

Anybody struggling with their direct reports and/or line manager's mental health issues and if so, how are you coping?

Quite a few of my colleagues seem to be coping with poor mental health and coming in late, taking days off, leaving early, being freed from certain responsibilities or roles etc. because of their anxiety or depression. The youngsters seem to find it helpful to talk often and openly about their struggles.
