Away with work - room arrangements

I'm away soon with work. I have a question though. If you've been away for a conference, have you ever been expected to share a room with a colleague?

Yes. In my last company (I left around 18 months ago) you were expected to share a twin room with a colleague if travelling with work. I hated it. Thankfully my new company doesn't do this.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 01/09/2024 16:38

Not expected, nor would I. I wouldn’t go if I was expected to share.

Yes. But this was over 30 years ago! We were used to it in my industry (travel). You'd meet up with a load of strangers at the airport and be paired up - you'd try to pick someone who didn't look like a weirdo or a snorer. It was unusual if you got a room to yourself.

I had this too. Once had to share a bed at the George's V in Paris. It was massive tho. Shared with some one who got Egyptian tummy in Hurghada was eventually allowed my own room as she stank.

20 odd years ago, yes, with 1 person I knew and 1 stranger. We all worked our own areas around the country then met once a year for a social. It didn't bother me then but wouldn't now.

Another time, again 20 years ago in my subsequent job, my boss (male) wanted us to share a room for a few days to keep costs down. He was actually a friend before I started working for him, and I knew he fancied me...I didn't want to share and would've said but his mum (family business) told him it wasn't happening before I got the chance to!

Ponderingwindow · 01/09/2024 16:41

Never been asked

I have medical issues that would make this impossible. I would not be able to go on the trip.

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/09/2024 16:43

Only once about 15 years ago. We were friends outside work . We were also working for a charity where every penny counted.

Fuck no. And I would refuse!

Greentreesandbushes · 01/09/2024 16:48

It’s down to the company policy, you need to ask. I have shared, as recently as 2019 and I have also had my own room on last events with a different company.

Redhairandtubs · 01/09/2024 17:00

I shared a room with colleagues years ago but we were late teens and thought it was great fun! I don't think any company nowadays would expect employees to share.

AgnesX · 01/09/2024 17:03

God no. And I wouldn't expect anyone else to either.

Blahblahblah2 · 01/09/2024 17:03

Only when I was a teenager, which was ok. I've been asked to share since then and I refused. Absolutely not!

coxesorangepippin · 01/09/2024 17:04

Absolutely no chance

Fercullen · 01/09/2024 17:10

Not for normal work travel but for the annual global conference attended by tens of thousands of employees, everyone except very senior people (think country manager and above) had to share. I hated it.

DoYouReally · 01/09/2024 17:20

I would absolutely refuse to share a room with a colleague.

DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2024 17:48

I once worked for a small company where we were all supposed to be attending a trade show. It was expected that I'd share a room with a colleague. I point blank refused, much to the puzzlement of my employer, who genuinely thought it was an acceptable ask. I volunteered to stay behind and hold the fort in the office instead.

xyz111 · 01/09/2024 17:52

No, there was 20 of us away recently and all had our own rooms.

readysteadynono · 01/09/2024 17:54

Yes, sometimes. Always same sex.

overgrowntoddler · 01/09/2024 18:02

Teacher we try and individually room if it possible and we pay the single supplements but me and my HOD always share and we have the best time!!

godmum56 · 01/09/2024 18:13

Not when I'm away on work business.

However, we've had a few all expenses paid overnights for social occasions and we have been asked to pair up to share with colleagues.

LadyLapsang · 01/09/2024 21:47

Never and I would pay myself rather than share. About thirty years ago I took the place of a man on a professional course and was allocated to the male floor and the rooms were not en suite, I could hear the guy snoring in the next room. DH sometimes shares on team building events but not on proper work trips.

Arconialiving · 01/09/2024 22:19

In the last place I worked, they did expect people to share rooms. I therefore simply refused to attend. It wasn't looked upon favourably & was one of the reasons I left (not the main reason at all, but another reason why working there wasn't great!)

OnTheBoardwalk · 01/09/2024 22:24

Nope never, how would company liability for this work?

Sandra kept me up all night and watched YouTube till 4 in the morning so I can’t attend the conference today

I know some self employed contractor do this but that is their choice

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 01/09/2024 22:25

I've never been expected to share a hotel room with a colleague and am appalled that some people have.
