Does anyone work as cabin crew?

Hi, just looking for advice please.

I am considering applying for a Cabin Crew position with a short - haul airline over the next few years and would like to hear from other Mums of school age children how this fits in with your family life. I imagine it's only possible with a rock solid support system in terms of childcare and a well paid spouse as the salary is crap. Do you feel your job dictates your whole life? Is it worth it to do something you love? Do you feel miss out on your children growing up?

It's something I've always wanted to do but not sure whether to wait a few more years until the children are more independent.

Thanks!

Tbh I can't see it being a family friendly job. You fly in different times of the day not to meantion the time difference.

I did it for Ba for a few years I enjoyed it but I found it very hard when I’d my kids

in some ways it was great as I sometimes had longer blocks of time with them as if have a few days in a row off mid week
but it was hard going because i was so tired.

we had to have full time nursery even though I might have a few mid week days free !!

I missed a lot of weekends and family time

maybe with short haul it wouldn’t be so bad

will your husband be able to do all school drop off and pick ups ??

Thankyou for your response. It's possible we could manage school runs with the help of my parents. What was the reason you left the position? Did you change field completely?

Damn easyJet putting the idea in my head with their recruitment drive for the over 50's. I saw it and thought wow maybe being in my 30's I'm not too old to apply!

I left because the pay was shit And when I was away the amount of money wasn’t enough to go explore or sight see or anything I was starting to spend the nights alone in my hotel room eating cupa noodles just waiting to go home !

I’d worked in hr for years before I did this do I went back to it and now work 8-4 Monday - Thursday which is way better with small kids !!

with school aged kids and not doing long haul though I think it could be manageable!!

id say why not give it a go and you can always quit if it doesn’t work out!

Not me, but a friend does. She managed to get set days when she came back from maternity leave, but this had to include a weekend day and the shift could be any point in the day including finishing in the middle of the night. Also sometimes things go wrong and she's still expected to work a flight if it's delayed ( worst case was the return flight being cancelled so had to stay in Spain overnight). She says she couldn't do it without her parents living nearby and helping with childcare.

Ahh I see. Makes complete sense.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I may apply for a short haul fixed term contract for next summer!

Thankyou. Yes, being delayed / cancelled is something to take into consideration!
