Daughter's Interview

snakeface · 29/08/2024 11:36

My daughter is going to an interview tomorrow for a waitress position. She is expected to 'work the floor' for a few hours, as part of the interview. Should she be paid for this and how should she broach the subject of payment?
Thanks

I would assume this is basically a “trial shift” and is usually unpaid, but definitely ask. If it’s part of the interview then I’d assume unpaid trial shift. I had one when I worked in a restaurant as a teen, they shouldn’t be more than a few hours at most- it’s basically a chance for them to see if she is suitable for the job.

I'm afraid it's normal to be unpaid. But on the other hand an interview is a rubbish way to assess if someone is a good fit.

Unless it's a very short time then a trial shift should be paid nowadays. My teens had paid trial shifts and they knew they'd be paid for 5 hrs at minimum wage or whatever.
She should ask the rate of pay for the trial and avoid anywhere that doesn't pay as they may be one of those places that does lots of "trial shifts " but never takes any of them on!

My DS did a trial shift (he didn't ask to be paid just did it as he wanted the job) . He did well on trial shift so got offered job and it got paid for the trial shift hours in first pay roll.

Unless she's giving up other paid work to do the trial shift, can't see it's an issue to give up a couple of hours.

I have seen this with two sons.
Four interviews. Two did not even contact or reply to them after a 'trail shift'. One did after my son contacted them to say 'no thanks', but no reason given. One got a job from a trial shift - and they paid him the money from the trial shift in his first pay packet.

Thanks for your answers
She says she will ask at the interview but doesn't want to ask about money by text in case it sounds bad.
I'm self employed and haven't done an interview or applied for a job in 30 odd years. And those I employ have all come through word of mouth, so I'm at a loss to give her any meaningful advice
