Does anyone know of local councils provide personal loans to their employees?

Many employers will allow some form of early payment of wages, however you pay it back directly out of your wages for however long it takes. My employer only allows it for December wages though, for Christmas.

Why do you ask?

dothey · 23/08/2024 11:38

Starting a junior entry role at my local council in September
But I don't even know who to ask + I feel a bit embarrassed to to and o don even know how to go about asking

It seems they the loan opportunities are not publicised at all because I have gone through all the paperwork work sent to me to familiarise myself with things and didn't see anything about loans to employees

Does your council area have a credit union? I know of councils where workers can get loans through the credit union and then pay it back directly from their salary

Some employers provide salary support eg access to loans via a third party or credit union which are paid back through payroll deductions.

Some give hardship grants.

Some will pay wages early, as PP said.

It’s unlikely that a new employee who hasn’t passed any probation period would be able to access all of these things. It will depend on the employer.

Are you struggling before starting a new job, OP? Have you approached places like food bank for support? Asked your bank for overdraft or loan?

What is you want to ask for? How much money? Do you know when you'll receive your first paypacket and how much will be in it? If you're not claiming benefits, look into it.

dothey · 23/08/2024 14:11

@ButtSurgery I want to know if they do ofeer loans to their employees and if they do, I would apply for it and wondering how to go about finding out etc

But I think I will forget about it I find it already stressful thinking about it all

OP posts:
ButtSurgery · 23/08/2024 14:12

I mean, are you asking for £200 or £5k?

It's changes what you're looking for.

Are you up to speed on benefits claims etc?

dothey · 23/08/2024 21:09

5k? That would go along way but so will £200
I doubt they can loan up to 5k though

Do you mean that you need an advance on your first wage packet?

Or an actual loan?

dothey · 23/08/2024 21:12

Any, but I don't think they offer any

I don't think they do, but you should be able to get a season ticket loan easily if you need to travel by public transport to work

My partner has worked for local council for 30 years ….never heard of this…..they are associated with credit unions…he used to save with one….his savings came directly out of his wages…..he could have had a loan with one if he had wanted

dothey · 23/08/2024 21:16

@Kitkat1523 yes more likely the way they operate thanks

The credit union he saved with was twos and blues….think a few local authorities have an association with them

Kitkat1523 · 23/08/2024 21:19
