Does anyone know if the tax credits help out if you go to college

Am thinking about going to college in September to do special needs classroom assistant. I was wondering if this is classed as full time education and will the tax credit people help?? Am in Scotland if this makes any difference (know laws are different and that).

Can't answer for any Scotland specifics but you still get CTC if you are not working/in education. WTC obviously you have to be working so you can't get.

the tax credits don't differ in Scotland.

if you're not working then no WTC, but you can still get CTC.

you can cut back on your hours to accommodate education and still get WTC, as long as you don't go under 16 hours.

Would I get the same amount of ctc I get now?? Our ctc has just halved because of dh's income and my pathetic £500 per year income.

What I basically wanted to know was if there was an element to the tax credits that paid you to go on to further education. Maybe I would be elegable for a bursary????

it depends on your joint income as a couple for both CTC AND WTC and if your child is in a registered nursery or cared for by a registered childminder.

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 20:31

no, there is not an element of tax credits that pays you to be in FT education.

you need a bursary and then watch out and double check your form, because you may need to report that as income in your joint amount.

singyswife · 16/04/2008 20:34

What so you mean I could lose money from the tax credits if I get a bursary?? Im sorry to be so thick but I am looking into all the ins and outs before I commit to anything.

check with the DWP website, that should tell you.

you do lose some means-tested benefits with bursaries, FWIW.

not sure if TC is one of them, but TC is calculated on your total joint income AND the amount you spend on childcare with a registered childcare provider.

I wuodnt need childcare, kids will both be at school and my mum will pick them up. Do you know if the council tax rebates are affected by going to college etc. Just to let you know I have a serious problem when it comes to anything changing in my life (my dh says its a phobia) and I get totally loopy and have to check out absolutely everything!!! Sorry

Tbh you'd probably only be entitled to a learning grant or something similar, and you'd be lucky to get £100 for the whole year which is for books etc.

You won't get anything that will effect your tax credits.

Indith · 16/04/2008 20:44

If you are in full time education then you get a rebate on council tax, but has to be over a certain number of hours a week which I can't remember off the top of my head.

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 20:44

you really need to talk to your council. if your husband is in work you probably won't get a council tax rebate, but your local council will know.

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 20:45

her husband is in FT employment, Indith.

talk to your council, sing.

Indith · 16/04/2008 20:47

It wouls work as a rebate though I think still,as she would be an exempt adult. Last year dp was a full time student, I was only part time so not entitled to a rebate for myself, but as dp was exempt we did have a reduction for him.

singyswife · 16/04/2008 20:48

Thanks, I will talk to the council there is also an open day next week at the college where you can discuss things like that. As I said earlier I just freek out completely when anything in my life is about to change and next week is a really long time away to be thinking things over until I can discuss them with someone. Thanks
