How to communicate to my boss about colleague underperforming

Hi all, looking for some advice on the below situation and how I can best position myself to negotiate for a good pay rise and bonus as a result.

  • new team set up, my boss is in charge, he handpicks 3 people to be involved (including me and a male colleague) and then we also have 2 others join
  • the male colleague and I are the most senior and experienced in what this team needs to do
  • one of the team is unable to deliver on the tasks we need her to without a lot of support. This was not made clear before she joined us. I’m asked to support her on her tasks by providing advice and reviewing things
  • she is still not doing things that well. I have to correct simple things, she lacks critical thinking, no initiative etc. She is holding the team back as we have tight deadlines!
  • today we found out my male colleague is leaving for another role
  • that means our team will now only have 3 people who can do their job at a good level plus this colleague who simply can’t

Basically I’d really appreciate some advice on 1) how I best communicate to my boss that the support isn’t working but we might need her as a “body”. Not sure I trust her to do even the easy stuff tbh
2) how can I position myself as the right-hand of my boss. We already get on very well but I want to make sure I’m offering solutions and strategic thinking for the challenges ahead as we lose a key member of our team

I think that your colleague leaving is a good prompt to open the discussion. Explain that you have concerns about the lack of support and ask if there are other options to replace your colleague, if possible, on the basis that some support is not as good quality as you would like.
