Zara or hotel reception?

theautumnleavess · 14/08/2024 11:22

I'm in a position where I have been offered two jobs.
One is a hotel receptionist
The other is Zara
Both full time
Same pay etc

I'm so torn

What would you do ?

We've got a few ex Zara staff in our store and the stories they tell are not good so I'd say hotel. Saying that I suppose our ex colleagues say the same about our company when they move on.

The commute would be the dealbreaker for me though. You wouldn't gain that much time back by the time you factor in the commute.

Receptionist 100% but I'd only do it until I cld get something better even if that is a mon-Fri receptionist job.

You will learn great transferable skills that will help u work your way up.

Tell them ur away over Christmas and see what they say. That wld give u 16 months to find another job lol.

Izzynohopanda · 14/08/2024 13:52

Hotel. I wouldn’t commute for a retail job either.

LaerealSilverhand · 14/08/2024 13:54

Hotel reception. More opportunities for progression, and less chance of your employer going bust (just look at what has happened to high street fashion stores).

yorktown · 14/08/2024 13:55

Hotel. Would not commute for an hour to Zara.

This might also give you good experience if you wanted to apply for something else in a while.

Thanks everyone
Well the reception job starts 3 weeks before zara
Do you think it's worth going and seeing what it's like ?
Then I always have a back up

Yes, definitely.

At Zara do you have to push a store card? I had friends who quit part time retail jobs as the targets for card sign ups were so ridiculous.

Marseillaise · 14/08/2024 16:16

Travel costs will take a big chunk out of your earnings if you opt for Zara. I'd go with the hotel every time.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 14/08/2024 17:02

Hotel. Much mote chances of future opportunities and a lot less boring I'd say.

Make a few more enquiries about things pps above have asked before deciding though.

Let us know what you decide and good luck!

My son in law is inb retail. He only ever gets Christmas Day off, and has to work the full day on Christmas Eve and Boxing day.
Even if you were unlucky enough to have to work Christmas Day at the hotel, it would only be half the day, so you could have your Christmas Morning and lunch, or late afternoon and dinner.

Why you're even thinking of taking a retail job that involves a two hour round trip commute, I've no idea. That would be a pain every single working day. The Christmas thing, just once a year (and maybe not even that).

Marseillaise · 14/08/2024 12:40

But you possibly get free meals at the hotel, and other discounts?

You're on to something there! My OH gets 2 nights a year at a 5* hotel (mulitple locations) plus meals with her new job. My (limited!) mathematician head would be out weighing the figures. But based on instinct I'd be going with the hotel!

GiddyNavyJoker · 14/08/2024 18:59

I dunno. They're quite expensive if we were fully paying customers and they're always busy, but I suppose everything is relative.

BobbyBiscuits · 14/08/2024 19:03

Retail could be more tiring, and you'd be spending a lot of time on your feet organising stock, stacking shelves, folding clothes etc. hotel at least you'll be seated. And it's probably quite a nice desk as it's public facing.
I've done retail and reception and would always choose reception.
But it's fantastic you've been offered both, it means your CV and letter must have impressed. Those types of roles often get flooded with applicants. so if you don't like it, you'll know you won't find it hard to find something else.

MilkyCappuchino · 15/08/2024 16:50

Both will pay the same. Hotel will allow you to sit down and do some computer work? What is your professional ambition if you have some? Office job or just a job

Possibly. The only problem is if you fall in love with the hotel job.

2001 to 2006 hotel receptionist
2007 to 2012 conference & events co ordinator; piss poor wages even for longevity shown and yep one Christmas off in the entire time worked, because often I was reminded the female manager above you had a worse deal if it wasn’t for some high achieving husband earning the bucks really to keep both.
2019 summer - hotel receptionist summer of 19 on zero hours I achieved just about £16,500 in this grim role I could walk to and from. Worked the hours no one else wanted too.

An e-commerce company any day.
