Charity sector and earnings

I'm middle management for a charity in a central role earning 40k-45k. I don't want to step up to senior management. I already manage a small team. I work really hard often above my full time hours. Am early 40s.

I like it but I just wish I earned a bit more for what I do. However to pivot I might have to drop earnings for a while so would it be worth it?

Anyone else branched out from working for a charity?

I think about it then get really busy and do nothing about it.

I moved from the charity sector to the civil service and now earn much more. You’ll have lots of transferable skills.

I've been considering civil service. Do you mind me asking what sort of a transition it was? Was it a similar role/level? Or something you trained for?

It's so depressing. I was on that sort of range and had been for the 10 years I worked at my last company. 2 years ago I moved to the private sector. I'm in tech so maybe it's even more drastic, but I was paid 50% more when I started my role and within a year had moved up to top end of the pay band and am earning now almost 2ce what I originally was. Plus I've received stock. And work fewer hours (like you I often worked above and beyond when at the charity as we were a small team with big ambitions.)

Some charities are beginning to be a bit more competitive with their salaries but for a lot the money simply isn't there as no one wants to fund back office work.

It took me a while to find my role (and the market I think is a bit shit now) but depending on what you do, you might not need to take a pay cut to move as lots of skills are transferable - you just need to find the right company to recognise it.

(The other role that I was offered was in local govement and they pay wasn't as competitive but I did know that at least their was a pay scale and room for advancement which didn't exist where I was previously.)

I am
now a self employed charity strategist. I work with small independent U.K. charities and community groups - and supporting organisations (Councils, CVS etc) and offer digital templates, mini membership, online courses, live webinars and full day trainings as well as consultancy work.

I specialise in strategy and operational work - getting the ‘business’ aspects ironed out, set up and help with sustainability and succession planning.

I work part time - 20 hours a week and generally make £25k.

It was a broadly similar role. Definitely look into it!

Don't rule out running a charity, I do and it's the best role I've ever had. Just need to pick the right charity.

@Salarygoals sorry for the rushed poorly written response. Trying to walk a dog and type…
