Signing the contract - but never starting

Has anyone else signed a contract for a new job, but then never actually started it ?
If so, why ??

And did you know/suspect at the time that you were unlikely to start ?

I feel bad I’ve been offered a better role after signing and now I need to let them know 🙈

When are you supposed to be starting the role you’re going to turn down?

Mid September

Make sure you tell them with good notice that follows what is in the contract - i.e. one month

Just state that personal circumstances have changed and regretfully you need to withdraw from the role and you are giving them xx weeks notice of this.

It's not that unusual. The most important thing is that you deal with it professionally and courteously - don't mess them about and don't ghost them.

Try not worry about it too much; it’s important that you’re happy with your decision, as it can feel daunting and a big decision.

Candidates rejecting positions they have previously accepted is not as uncommon as organisations would like, but an outcome they should prepare for. Agree with other posters - handle it professionally and respectfully, also quickly. Hopefully there’s another suitable candidate that they can offer the position to and will happily take the role. Win-win.

Good luck in your new job.
