Is there generally winter term term time only jobs advertised in the autumn term?

Will school support jobs be advertised for January start dates in the autumn term?

I notice lots are advertised now for September starting dates, does the same happen with January term starts in the autumn time?

Hope that makes sense!

There aren't likely to be many January starts

Potentially, if staff leave or there’s a need for an extra body due to an new EHCP or a new child.
Probably not as many as in September.

theaplie · 18/07/2024 16:26

Thank you, does that mean most school support roles start in September over January or April?

Most jobs start in September, yes. They will generally have been advertised and filled by now.

Caffeineislife · 18/07/2024 16:33

Yes. Most term time school roles generally start in September. As a PP has said, January or April roles are usually only if a staff member has left or started maternity leave. A new child with an EHCP starts the school or a child already at the school gets awarded an EHCP. You might get an odd extra support role in preparation for SATs come up in year 5 or 6 in January but with school budgets like they are they are rare.

Fixeditralph · 18/07/2024 16:34

At the school I work at, support staff needed for any new provisions or new pupils would be much more likely to start in September. They will advertise at other times if someone leaves or if funding is granted for a pupil, as these can happen at any time! There often support jobs in my area. If you’re looking now, they will obviously say September as they want the role filled asap, but it’s not usually a case of only recruiting at the start of terms, just as and when the roles come up.

I work in school recruitment. I don't agree that it's only September start for support staff(assuming you mean TA?). People can leave at any point in the year as it's only a months notice and people choose to move on or do different things.
I always tell people enquiring to keep an eye on our website or the council jobs bulletin.
Just fyi though we have a few TAs whose fixed term contract is ending and they are not being replaced. We just don't have the budget to pay them!

I'm more thinking school office jobs like admin and finance, I've got a long notice period in current job so I think I've missed the boat with September ones unfortunately

Just to make you aware as you're obviously aiming to move into education, in England there (bizarrely, given our terrible weather) is no winter term. It goes autumn, spring, summer. Not trying to be an annoying pedant, just thought it might help you at some point!

Dearover · 18/07/2024 17:37

Finance jobs tend not to be term time only

theaplie · 18/07/2024 17:37

Thank you all

@Harvestmoo I'm not sure I said winter term but I get you.

Agree with notstrong support roles are recruited across the year just depending on when vacancies arise whereas teaching staff have set times they can resign and we recruit accordingly.

I am in Finance and work term time + 2 if you are looking at an SBM role many of those are 52 weeks particularly at secondary level.

Look on your local council page as well as TES jobs.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 18/07/2024 18:08

If it's a temporary post it may be a spring term start due to financial year . Otherwise it would just depend on when the member of staff currently doing the role decides to leave .

Support jobs unlike teachers only need to give 4 weeks notice so vacancies do not necessarily fall inline with term start dates.

JoyousPinkPeer · 18/07/2024 23:08

Most TTO support staff resign at end August sp they get paid over the summer holiday period, hence jobs being advertised now. IMO not as many will be advertised for January.
