Changing AL from days to hours

We’ve just got a new HR system at work to book annual leave etc. It shows our entitlement in hours rather than days as per the old system (and my contract).

Can this be done without consultation?

I work part time if that makes a difference.

Ours changed a few years ago & we lost out. We work an average 9 hour shift so a day off was one days annual leave. Now that it's hours, the powers that be say a working day is 7 hours so to take a day's leave you need more than a day's leave. As usual shift workers are never taken into consideration when there's changes made

Sounds like they are taking the pi** and getting away with it or your hours have potentially increased to counter the change in how your annual leave is taken for a day off. This calculators your best friend as it will give you the minimum entitlement you should get (some companies may offer more). https://www.gov.uk/calculate-your-holiday-entitlement

The company can put whatever system they like in without consulting staff. It's not your decision what they use.

You won't be any worse off with entitlement and for most part timers, vacation is calculated in hours rather than days as it's easier to track.

We have it in days and I take a day off, irrespective of whether I'm taking my shortest day of 4.5 hours or my longest day of 8 hours. So I could take the piss and only take long days off. For those PT staff who do take the piss, a change to hours would be detrimental.

I can see why you might want yo be consulted if that's what you've been doing, but I'd take it as a bonus that you've got away with it so far.

At a previous job we had someone taking the 'piss' as stated here. She worked a 3 hour shift and 2 8 hour shifts per week. She always took the 8 hour shifts as annual leave and the 3 hour shift as toil.

Meant she was getting 144 hours per year annual leave based on 6 weeks (18 days) allowance.

When we went over to hours she got her correct entitlement of 114 hours per year (19 hours x 6 weeks). She was not happy!

Wouldn’t have anything to do with your bank holidays now being pro-rata by any chance? 😏

We have ours in hours now, far better especially for me as I work part time and not the same hours each day. Plus being able to take part days.

You shouldn’t lose out at all, it should work out as the exact same amount of leave. If you think you are, for a reason like the shift work given by a pp, then you should raise it because that’s not ok.

The only issue that we had when the change was introduced was that the working week is nominally based on 37 hours with Monday to Thursday allocated 7.5 hours and Friday 7 hours. With the hours based system it was theoretically possible for someone get more days leave if they took only Fridays off.
