To take sick leave for PND?

bit stuck on what to do and not sure if sick leave for this is even an option.

experienced Postnatal depression and PTSD after birth of DD. I did counselling and Sertraline and definitely felt better for it. Before being discharged from the MH team I was told I would be referred to a specialist psychotherapist for some ‘issues’ that couldn’t be addressed by perinatal team but as the wait for this service was months and months these issues might have resolved in that time.

I’ve been back at work after mat leave for 6 months now, 4 days a week. I’ve now received an appointment for the psychotherapist and of course they can only see me on my working days. I can’t change these days at work as no space to swap in dds nursery. Not the type of thing to pop out of work for and come back after an hour as I know it will be heavy hitting and draining.

not sure what my options are, do I go off sick or discuss with occupational health for reasonable adjustments for time to go? I’m worried about letting colleagues down who have already been stressed enough with my mat leave.

I feel like I need to bite the bullet and go for the psychotherapy, in a nutshell the ‘issues’ still have a profound impact on my day to day life even though I look like like everything is normal. I’ve not been physically intimate with dh since before daughter was born and she’s now 18 months, can’t even take her swimming incase people see my body, I have an irrational fear of leaving her alone around male relatives, even my nephews who are children.

not sure how I would even discuss this with my manager or occupational health but I know the psychotherapy is very needed.

Discuss it with them, if you can arrange for say 4pm you can do the majority of the day and then leave. I'm sure they can adjust around that.

Open and honest conversation with your employer. They should definitely consider making reasonable adjustments for you, so you can attend your therapy.
