Any stories with happy endings about shite managers?

another rubbish day at work where my manager alienates the entire company and his team. Half of us are job hunting. The other half are depressed and dismayed.

HR and Directors have been conducting skip level reviews to “start the process” but I don’t know what they are hoping to achieve. They said it’ll take months to “sort out”

Working life is a misery. Nobody gets to enjoy their annual leave because of all the stress.

Anyone had a similarly shit manager who was ‘dealt with’ and the team had a happy ending?

I like my job and the job market is rubbish at the moment so while a new job is a good idea - it isn’t that easy right now.

Me, they left, instant weight lifted.

Had no idea it was coming which made it all the more sweeter.

Mine took flexible retirement and was required to move to a different role.

However I have had so many shit managers, I couldn't begin to count them. A good manager is a rare thing. I thankfully have one now, but I think she's not that happy and I dread her moving on!

This is what I so dearly want! I just have a horrible feeling he thinks he’s the next CEO and will stay and fight.

Nobody and I mean nobody can work with him. Clients find him weird. And we just go day to day hoping HR will finally do something.

I have never had a manager so bad they’ve required skip level reviews and received bad feedback across the company.

I’ve had good managers and average managers throughout my career but never anyone like this 😭

I have a bad one right now, who likes to paint himself as Mr Nice Guy, but it's all an act. It feels really insidious as I have seen him bully some newer less confident team members but under the radar. I only know because they have sought support from me and I have seen the shocking messages. I can't stand him, he achieves nothing. I am job hunting now after just having missed out on voluntary redundancy.

I agree with you about having never experienced something quite like this, and I have been working for 25 years. I have had bad managers, but not a spectacularly underhanded one like this before.

BigDahliaFan · 16/07/2024 07:27

My stepsons manager, had highest level from Head Office and come in and tell her to stop being a Dick basically. It’s a hard to recruit to industry so they didn’t want to lose her but also they were losing so many staff with blunt exit interviews citing her and her team were unhappy.

She has stopped being such a dick.

my manager was an alcoholic bully. After 3 years of it being really bad I went to HR and told them. She was quietly retired and I got her job for a year till we recruited and then I got another pay lift when her replacement came in. It’s like night and day. So much better.

Scarletttulips · 16/07/2024 07:30

I’ve never seen a bad manager do anything other than be shifted higher to get them out the way.

I wish Karma existed for these people.

I think they are so busy looking out for themselves they forget they have a team they should be fighting for.

chickencat5 · 16/07/2024 07:34

I resigned due to bullying from my manager. They treated everyone badly, so I just got up one day and decided to leave- told their manager and HR. Gave them a months notice and expressed I would avoid and not deal with them during my last 3 weeks.

I then was advised to do a complaint- I was found another job in same company, and did the complaint- they left suddenly a few months later. Sadly my manger now isn't great and avoids me. So I've asked not to deal with them as I'm now on long term sick. 🤦🏼‍♀️ this time I've got the union involved

WhoStoleMySpoons · 16/07/2024 07:47

That's what happened to my bad manager. She was one of those nice in public and dreadful bully behind closed doors types. Morale was rock bottom and three quarters of her team quit in one 3 month period but somehow she was promoted.

I left as fast as I could, that was my happy ending. Life is too short to work for shit managers and it’s not my job to reform them or suffer under them until they grow a heart and brain.

Newgirls · 16/07/2024 08:16

our toxic manager left by mutual agreement. It came after three high profile people resigned and the ceo asked them why. They moved some roles around and they were gone 🎉

I am frantically looking but like I say in my OP, the job market is shite. So I’m stuck for the foreseeable

Ours was awful

He was a narcissist,perverted,entitled and a bully

He had his favourites and you where fucked if your face didn't fit

His wife (who is the nicest lady ever) was low key bullied by him too-he put up with her, while shagging his way round the other female managers

He would follow the women around (he liked them young) and make a pest of hinself-women would leave and complain but they'd brush them under the rug

Customers would complain and he'd just make the emails disappear or ignore them if they tried to speak to his face

One day,we where getting slammed and he came out to 'help'

I was standing next to him, when he just gave me the dirtiest look and walked out

Sat in his car for nearly an hour and drove off

Within 3 days we had a new manager (who was a silly cow)

He had a year off (fully paid) and then quit-i would love to know what really happened-the whitewash was unreal and they tried to take us for idiots

We now have yet another manager and she's amazing-everything a manager should be

What about an internal transfer or secondment? Worth asking around 😅

mumonthehill · 16/07/2024 08:34

Awful manager, whole team raised a grievance. Nothing was done so within 3 months whole team left. In away he did me a favour as I moved on to much better job and more money. It was very stressful at the time. Oh and he is still in post, my replacement left within 3 weeks.

Witchbitch20 · 16/07/2024 08:37

She’s leaving in 5 weeks. Mood within the team has instantly improved.

Badburyrings · 16/07/2024 08:56

My bullying director did me the biggest favour ever because I left and have gone on to another job with a 50% pay rise. I did raise it with HR, so did many others. She’s still there though and has been for over 30 years. I think they are waiting for her to retire. The staff turnover is huge.

malakkalakka · 16/07/2024 09:15

I was bullied horrifically by a former Head of Dept. Ex colleagues still contact me to ask me if I'm ok fifteen years later. She was vindictive and cruel.

Anyway, when I finally got another job I immediately went on Facebook that night and posted that I had a new job and was really excited etc etc. I knew she had flying monkeys checking my social media but I didn't care.

The next day she called me into her office and gave me a stern talking to about how bad form it was not to tell her first and how upset she was about it. I sat there looking very very amused and told her repeatedly how sorry I was for causing her so much pain, while v clearly looking like I didn't give a fuck.

Yes that was unprofessional. But so was arranging staff get togethers at lunch and always leaving me out of the emails. So was calling me on the day of my parent's funeral to ask me when I was coming back to work. So was charging me 20p to heat my sandwich on her fucking toastie machine. So fuck her.

I was the best teacher in her department and my leaving screwed her over. I didn't care.

EasterlyDirections · 16/07/2024 09:21

We had a round of redundancies. He was made compulsorily redundant (the higher management had twigged by then) and the rest of us had the choice of voluntary, which I and some other colleagues took. Both those that left and those that stayed took great satisfaction from the fact that he was made to go and the rest of us were given a choice.

apeachandapear · 16/07/2024 20:54

I've never seen shit or bullying managers leave because of pressure/being managed out.
They are usually supported from above or have been hired from above so are protected.

Danikm151 · 16/07/2024 20:58

Incompetent Director. He just liked to call meeting after pointless meeting but not actually get anything done. He chose to leave apparently- we all went to the pub to celebrate… without him 😂

PandaChopChop · 16/07/2024 21:08

I had a terrible manager. Micro managed, bullied, inconsistent, refused to listen to anything. I moved to another role in the company.
She's still there in the same role and she cannot hold on to a colleague for longer than 3 months because of her behaviour. I don't understand how the fuck she remains in that position. I have to work with her in some capacity because of the role I do and I really enjoy telling her what to do

That's next level! I've mostly had poor managers in a long working life. It's shit really. I can't wait to retire!

30yearsuntilretirement · 16/07/2024 22:45

@PandaChopChop thats appalling :(

I hope to have some happy news soon!
