Any point contacting IT firms to see if they’d consider my son working unpaid as an intern ?

I’ve posted on a previous thread about the issues my DS aged 21 is having finding a job. This board was mentioned as somewhere to possibly get advice.
Would there really be any point emailing software firms to enquire about unpaid work experience ? He has a first class degree in CS but absolutely no work experience and this seems to be a big sticking point.
Should he send his CV or just an introductory email ? Any advice would be really appreciated Thanks !

Can his university careers department help with this? It would be better than cold calling organisations without a contact.

This, and also universities themselves have large IT departments, who maybe very willing to take on unpaid labour help an alumni with some work experience, even if only short term. Makes them look good at the Uni.

I work in an IT department of a university, your son needs to contact careers services at the university where he graduated and enquire about placements or any graduate schemes. At my university and I imagine many other places, it would not be possible for someone to "cold call" their way into an unpaid placement, this needs to be part of an official scheme because interns/placement students generate a lot of work and need support. An alternative for your son would be to try to get a job, literally any job and then build on this to maybe do IT helpdesk work or anything that gets him closer to his desired path. Good luck!

Has he not even got experience of working in a shop or something?!

Has he applied for graduate schemes?

It's not the same everywhere, I also work in a Uni IT department.

Have you tried your local County Council? Ours have a large IT team and offer summer internships, paid year long internships, apprenticeships and work experience
