Job dilemma

I have been working in my current school for over 10 years as a TA. I like the job but what really makes it great for me are my colleagues. We work so well as a team and make each day bearable and keep each other vaguely sane.

Schools are changing massively and the lack of money and deteriorating behaviour of children and parents, means it gets harder each year. Our job is becoming more based around crown control rather than helping the children and I'm nearly 60 and not sure how many more years I've got in me.

I've seen a job in a private school which I'm thinking of applying for - I know that doesn't guarantee good behaviour but I assume that if parents are paying, they at least value education and will make a fuss if behaviour escalates.

BUT, I can't imagine leaving my colleagues, life outside school is pretty rubbish at the moment and so work is currently my safe place (not that outside is dangerous, just a bit shit atm)

i know other people can leave which would change things and maybe i should see how things go but at my age, can I afford to wait or maybe I've left it too late anyway.

Everything keeps whirring around my head so I'm hoping some others peoples opinions or ideas might help - please?

Apply. You can always turn it down if offered and it doesn't feel right, but it'll be easier to make an informed decision if you've gone through the interview process.

Having good colleagues is valuable, but the people you work with could also change so it doesn't hurt to be aware of your options.

Agree with above. Worth applying. If you get an interview then you will get a feel for if you want to work there. Am in a similar position, job I love, colleagues I like but I feel a bit stuck so am going to begin to look at other options. Can always stay where we are!

Thanks for replying.

I think that's what I'll do, slight issue is that in teaching, references are usually taken up before interview which obviously means my existing school will know. I'm going to put please do not contact on the application form and cross my fingers if I do go for it.

TAs are being cut left right and centre where we are due to underfunding. I'd jump before you're let go.

Meant to update this. Well I applied and got it and start after half term.😁

Excited and terrified at the same time.

👍 well-done.

Fantastic news! I'm support staff and it's pretty miserable and getting worse. There's no money and we're understaffed and overworked. I got a new job today away from education- can't wait!

TammyJones · 29/10/2024 21:18

Well Done OP.

ShouldIstayornot · 30/10/2024 08:46

Thanks everyone and congratulations @Workiskilligme

I'm really worried at how many really dedicated support staff have had enough and are leaving and the impact that this will have in schools.
