Does any fixed term contract ever become permanent in the NHS?

Not automatically no. There would have to be a business case written and passed at various levels of management to create a permanent post, then it would have to be advertised and you would have to be interviewed

Yes it happens quite often. . I've been in a fixed term contract for 12 months initially, then another 12 months, and then became permanent. It was because it was a new project post and they had to gather all the data and then apply for permanent funding. But it's certainly not a given that it will become permanent, Funding priorities can change and it can depend on reason it's temporary in the first place

I think it would depend on the role. I have seen band 5 and above be made permanent relatively quickly but band 2 clerical roles be on 3 month fixed term being extended for another 3 months literally for 3 years. Eventually we encouraged that guy to move on for his own career as he requested permanent for a long time. They advertised his replacement as 12 month fixed term but at least it was an improvement.
