frustrated about the job opportunity

I am working in a professional role and work closely with admin staff. We work together as a team and support each other through our own processes and share some workload. A new manager started last year and decided that one particular admin member should be given a chance to work with the professional team and should be given a pay raise. We all supported this particular team member as they had no experience working at this level.
The staff member is now too close to the new manager to the point that they can’t be bothered to do anything else but to keep annoying junior members of the team. The middle manager was put on performance management because newly promoted admin had raised some concerns! The middle manager felt that the newly promoted staff was after their job and the senior manager was trying to manage them out. Eventually the middle manager resigned.

The middle manager role is always been a professional one because they would be managing both the professional and admin team .But the new manager has now decided that the middle manager can be a non professional role. We have highly experienced professionals in the team and feel that the move is unfair and the admin middle management means extra work for the professional staff.

i really wanted to apply for the position and as these jobs don’t come often and this would be a good opportunity to get practice even if I don’t get the job. Part of me feels so bitter and stressed that I think the whole thing is just a joke, I should not apply and lay low until I find another job.

Are you in the private or public sector? How big is your organisation? Does it have clear / centralised recruitment policies?

It’s a public sector job and despite all the recruitment guidelines, apparently it is possible to change the job requirements to favour the person who would not qualify otherwise.

That is frustrating but not especially unusual.

Are you cutting off your nose to spite your face by deciding not to apply?

Agree with this.

OP - Apply.

And also get your ducks in a row looking elsewhere if you feel this culture does not suit you.

If you get it - great, you can influence change. If not - you're out of there and no need to get embroiled in the 'she says, he says'.

Best wishes either way.

Thank you.

I would love to apply and grow professionally but I am worried that if I get the job I might end up being on performance management. I’m not ready to leave because of stress/ sickness and poor reference.
