DBS check - who normally pays?

DH has just had an enhanced disclosure certificate through.

They've asked him to register with the DBS update service, which is £13 a year.

Would that cost normally be on the employee or the employer?

Just trying to work out what is standard.

Agency work - you
Schools - mine didn't but pays for new ones every 3 years
I would recommend you doing it and as an automatic renewal
You only get one chance to sign up for the latter
I didn't do this, I never do automatic debits but bitterly regretted it as they forgot to remind me and it lapsed, which means going through the whole rigmarole again

At my work place we pay for the actual DBS check, but employees would pay for their own subscription to the DBS Update service.

Places where I previously worked would pay incl. the subscription for employees (except of course if the employee left)
If someone was doing work for the organisations on a SE basis it would be expected to be covered by the individual. Volunteers got it covered by the organisations.

At our place organisation pays for the initial and the employee the yearly subscription.

Our place covers both the initial DBS cost as well as the update service subscription.

It does indeed vary a lot! DS, who recently qualified as a nurse, had to pay for his own DBS check to work for one of the largest hospital trusts in the country! The money was recouped from his first three pay cheques. I was bemused and annoyed and think this kind of thing is just another reason that lots of nurses choose to work abroad.

i work in HR and i've worked in a number odd places where we've paid for the DBS, but not the update service.

it's just down to the faff of procedure - if we paid for everyone's update service, we'd need to reimburse as expenses and this would involve form filling and multiple sign offs etc, Every year..... we'd never get anything else done.

i let my update service lapse, as i forgot to renew, but i think its handy to have a DBS on the update service anyway, so when i next do a DBS, i'll put it back on as i have used it and it's handy for new jobs.

The employee would pay for the update service as they will get the benefit of it rather than the employer.
