Would you do this commute?

Possible part-time job - 18 hours/pw, to fit in with the school run.

Total just over 2 hours walking daily plus train ride which would be 25 mins return approx?

Ie 15-20 mins walk to school drop-off
Then 35 mins walk to train station
Train ride about 13 mins
Then 22 min walk

Then do it all again in reverse. Coming back it would be tight to get to school in time for collection due to the train times (let alone if the train was delayed/cancelled).

However- I don’t drive and I have also had plantar fasciitis (painful foot condition) for years, so the more I walk the worse it gets. I won’t be able to drive so please don’t argue about that point.

Could you cycle with the kids? Use a school bis even if it needs paid for? I think the walk is unsustainable- think of dark wet and cold winter mornings and evenings , you will all be miserable

How many hours of work a day? If it's an every day commute but only 18 hours a week, the days must be short?

cocoloco23 · 08/07/2024 23:38

If your plantar fasciitis gets worse the more you walk, it doesn’t sound like the commute is going to work for you. I’m assuming there’s no bus?

Have you asked if there’s any flexibility on working from home on some days?

Karmaisac4t · 08/07/2024 23:38

I wouldn’t no.

MujeresLibres · 08/07/2024 23:38

No, I wouldn't do that unless I had no reasonable alternative. I also have plantar fasciitis and I would be in serious pain by the end of the day.

Sethera · 08/07/2024 23:38

Roughly what % of your wage would go on train fares?

MollsDolls · 08/07/2024 23:39

No way. That's 4 hours travelling a day.

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 08/07/2024 23:40

How about cycling? Or an adult scooter? What's the pay like and do you need it financially?

Dreamerinme · 08/07/2024 23:47

Cycling is a no - I’m not a confident cyclist, the trains here don’t allow you to carry bikes on them during rush hour, and leaving it at the station in my town means it will be stolen within days. I don’t want a folding bike either, and I’ll look like a prat on a scooter at 50! Plus they are illegal and expensive.

No wfh as it’s in a school, 10-2pm roughly.

Plus as a pp said the walk in bad weather will be miserable.

I think it’s a no and good to hear I’m not imagining it as being untenable.

God no! that sounds hellish - 100% not worth it. You need something much more local or WFH for those hours.

Standard manual scooters aren't illegal. Round my way plenty of adults use grownup versions of the manual kid type ones to make their commute easier.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/07/2024 12:39

Absolutely not! Not worth it for the hours (or I suspect pay) that you'll be working.
