DC ASD diagnosed - Can I request Part-Time?

Hello

I work as a complaints handler in Canary Wharf which is a full time position.

DC has just been diagnosed with ASD and it’s really affected me. I want to reduce my hours (or leave work) to focus and spend more time with DC. I feel like I’m so burnt out from work, DC aren’t getting the attention they deserve.

I would like to either apply for: Voluntary Redundancy or Part-time hours.

I’m worried about whether this is something I can even request and wanted to see if anyone had any advice for me please.

Please advise.

TIA

You can made a flexible working request but your employer does not have to approve it - there is criteria to follow. Are there others doing the same job as you who work part time?
Voluntary redundancy can be more difficult - is your role still there and it sets a precedent

Hi @Parker231 No one in the two teams are part-time (approx 30 staff). I thought they may consider my requests under carer grounds. Anyhow thanks for your reply

I'd suggest looking for complaint jobs in public sector where flexible working is more usual. Have you applied for DLA? If so you may be able to get carers allowance (although this is not much). Some people will also get UC disability / carers element (you can get this up to a household income of £50k for a very disabled child). I went into public sector PT and sometimes I've really only worked for the adult company and pension as I wasn't earning much more than I would have got on benefits. You are also entitled to take 18 weeks unpaid parental leave up to age 18 with a disabled child. contact.org.uk/help-for-families/information-advice-services/your-child-your-family/flexible-working-and-time-off/

As a pp has said, you have the right to make a flexible working request, and your employer has a duty to consider this. However, they don't have to agree to it if they have solid reasons for needing to decline it.

I don't think you can just ask for voluntary redundancy if your employer is not offering this.

You can request it but they don't have to grant the request. However, they may be willing to put feelers out to see if this is an issue for anyone else with a view to creating a job share perhaps.
What I will say though, as a carer too, is that you will be far better working part time locally - you will find it easier to access local services for your child and local support groups, likely to be nearer to schools and to make connections that will help and support you as you parent your child. Bed yourself down in your local community if finances allow.
