Help! Got redundancy notice today!

Danzdanzdanz · 28/06/2024 15:09

I was just notified about my redundancy and I am in full panic mode.

Worked in the same company for over 10 years, young kids, mortgage...
Where do I start? I am in tech but hear it is quite tough at the moment. 🥲
Does anyone know any good career advisers that I can contact? I don't mind paying someone to help get me out of this state and come up with an action plan.

Please be kind! My current employer is not providing any support or counselling so I am really struggling 😔

What sort of payoff are you likely to get?
Can you find temp jobs to tide you over?

It's been a while since I was made redundant, but my company provided career counselling with an outside company. I'm surprised they're doing nothing, TBH.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 28/06/2024 15:16

Here is an ACAS guide to procedure that employers need to follow

https://www.acas.org.uk/redundancy

Rocknrollstar · 28/06/2024 15:19

You need to update your CV on LinkedIn. I am sorry for your situation and hope you find another post soon

Danzdanzdanz · 28/06/2024 15:21

No support at all. They will pay my notice and holidays and stat redundancy. This will give me 2 month. I don't feel I have anough time given I have been out of job market for so long! How do I find temp work?

OP posts:
LIZS · 28/06/2024 15:40

For 10 years' service you should get 10 weeks pay minimum(more if over 40) . Have they carried out a consultation or is the business folding?

JC03745 · 28/06/2024 15:48

I was in a similar situation a few years ago, no kids though. My company also provided career advice/support. Other than helping get my CV up to date, they were pretty useless though.
Do you have a union? If not, read through the ACAS support above on redundancy. Check through exactly what pay you should be entitled to. Up date linked in. Have you searched for a temp agency for your role? Does one exist? Have you spoken to ex-colleagues to ask if they have anything going on their companies, or at least spread the word. Best of luck.

Danzdanzdanz · 28/06/2024 18:26

How do I look for temp jobs? Is there a site for such jobs?
Where can I find career adviser in tech! I really need one 😞

OP posts:
LIZS · 28/06/2024 18:30

If you are in tech there will be agencies who place temps in those positions. Indeed and LinkedIn are also useful.

SummerBarbecues · 28/06/2024 18:31

It’s very tough in tech at the moment. What is your job? My colleagues in project management have been made redundant in January and many are still looking for jobs. They are all very good and experienced.

There aren’t many jobs out there for either temp or permanent roles.

lovernotfighter · 28/06/2024 18:43

HR bod here

As someone said above, your notice pay is at least 10 weeks' salary, with statutory redundancy on top of that, along with any holidays accrued but not yet taken. Depending on when your work anniversary is, you may be entitled to an extra week as your length of service has to include the stat. notice period, if that takes you to 11 years.

Refer to the government calculator to check how much redundancy pay you're entitled to as it's not necessarily a straight forward calculation.

Are they genuinely consulting about the change? If not, you may have a claim for unfair dismissal.

You can contact ACAS for advice or guidance.

Feel free to send me a PM too.

JC03745 · 28/06/2024 20:51

Excuse my ignorance, but could you narrow down/explain what 'tech' role you do? I have no idea whether you are a programmer who builds websites or you sell tech in Currys?

Danzdanzdanz · 28/06/2024 21:37

I am in tech management. Some of my colleagues are thinking to retrain! Can't believe it is that bad?!?
If anyone knows any temp agencies or career advisors please message me.
I will call Acas on Monday.

JC03745 · 28/06/2024 22:47

I am in tech management. Sorry, that doesn't explain much! Do you have IT skills, programming, web design, java, sharp, C++ etc or mainly staff management? I ask because DH works in IT and I'm trying to work out if 'tech' is the same and whether his contacts etc would be useful to you or not.

TeenLifeMum · 28/06/2024 22:47

Find agencies related to your field and look at any contracts (temp, mat cover, permanent) to build your cv.

Everyone I knew who’s gone through this has ended up happy and in a better position, but the limbo stage is horrible. It’s rubbish right now but won’t be forever.

https://techdevjobs.wordpress.com/organisations/

I'm not sure if this will be much help, possibly obliquely. This is a fairly random list of organisations that have employed tech people in a variety of roles including research, programming, web dev, project management, school teacher, data analysts etc. The list of names of organisations itself is possibly more useful at the moment than the links on the page (as the links just go to archived job adverts which are no longer open). Most (not all) are UK based, London-heavy.

If you want to get a sense of all the jobs I've added there please look at https://techdevjobs.wordpress.com/jobs-organised-by-sector-theme/

The purpose of the website isn't to advertise new roles but to gather examples of job adverts, job descriptions and person specifications for computing schoolteachers (and careers advisors) so that they can share with their students to show the range of computing and computing-adjacent careers.

At some point I will get around to adding links to the organisations' own vacancies pages to the first link in this post but if you like the look of any of them try googling the organisation's name and vacancies or jobs (and the many variations: goodness knows why all employers can't just stick /jobs at the end of their homepage to save job hunters searching for 'work for us', 'work with us', 'opportunities' or 'careers' etc, if 'vacancies' or 'jobs' doesn't bring it up!).

Are you more tech or more management? By that I mean develop code/build networks/desktop support or do you project manage, people manage?

I'm seeing more roles in things like Product management at the moment, so working with sales/client facing teams to identify product improvements then translating that into viable development opportunities through working with the tech teams and prioritising, costing, resources the work.

Personally I work in CyberSec, Governance, Risk and Compliance and if you have any interest, experience or aptitude in that area then there are roles out there.

You need to get your CV updated asap. But do it well - times have changed as have expectations. Agencies maybe able to help but there are some good templates out there as well. Don't pay someone to write your CV, I did this once and it was a complete waste of money. the book Knock Out CV by John Lees is superb.

Cyber is a growing market and this is quite buoyant right now. Many people have pivoted from tech to security but you need to demonstrate some aptitude for it or maybe a training course.

Set yourself up in LinkedIn, even with basic info, and setup job alerts so you can see what is out there and what is being asked.

btw instead of career advisors maybe try a few agencies which will be able to give you a feel for what the market is and what is out there.

KatPurrson · 29/06/2024 18:53

Hopefully the following will decrease your panicky feeling a little over timings.

If you get to the point of being out of work for four weeks you can claim a tax rebate. This could help tide you over for longer.

Sorry to hear that, OP. I was made redundant a few years ago, and it was devastating at the time. But I look back on it now as one of the best things that ever happened to me. It gave me a little push that sent my career off in a different and much better direction. You might find that it does the same for you.

Galliano · 29/06/2024 19:05

You're female - hopefully your skills are in an area where there's a D and I challenge 🤞🏻which may well help getting interviews etc. if you put that you are available on linked in recruiters will come to you

Clearinguptheclutter · 29/06/2024 19:08

I’m sorry i‘ve been in that situation, it turned out to be great but yeah it was shit at the time

as the hr pp said, you absolutely are entitled to 10 weeks, plus stat plus accrued holiday pay

Topee · 29/06/2024 19:35

If you post more specifically about your job/skills then you can probably get some recommendations about agencies that may be able to help.

MrsPinkCock · 29/06/2024 21:45

Are you working your notice OP or being paid in lieu?

Redundancy is paid gross, notice is paid net. So overall you’ll have at least 20 weeks pay, and if they’re making you work your notice you’re entitled to reasonable time off to search for jobs.

If you’re worried, have you considered trying outplacement services? For a fee they help you write your CV, apply for jobs, work out where your transferable skills can take you, etc.

Oblomov24 · 29/06/2024 21:47

Redundancy hurts you. Get your cv updated and out there for both permanent and temporary positions.
