Senior part time role

I don't need to work full time and want to be around for kids and pursue other interests, I have been in well paid jobs that are stressful and always full time, I take contract so I can have time off after them. I also have other passive income coming in from property.
I just keep falling into the habit of accepting a role and finding it too much, I interview well but my motivation isn't there to work full time.

I keep falling into this trap for the past 6 years where I go back too senior probably, can't handle the stress of the seniority and leave - my last role I had an awful toxic boss who made my life hell and that was ever so triggering and I'm not sure if I'd have left if I didn't have my safety net..(not needing the job)

I want to contract but part time and at a good day rate - these roles in my profession just don't seem to exist ? How does anyone go about working part time when in a senior role as It seems impossible ! I really want to work but not to death even for short stints.

You'll have to go for a less senior role and accept that you'll earn less but have less stress

I've tried ...I don't get them! I even downplayed the cv and was told I was over qualified

Have you tried working with a recruitment agency? The consultants can identify good opportunities and they can cover some of the ‘too senior’ concerns with hiring company? Ultimately if it is interim they shouldn’t have the usual concerns about previously very senior candidates getting bored and/or being flight risks. It would be great to find an agency that specialise in more senior part time interim work, I’m sure there are some out there.

I am a senior manager and I have worked part time for more than a decade.

There might be less jobs available at that level part-time but they do exist.

It all depends on the sector as well.

Also have you tried consulting? freelance contracts as well as temp ones?

I've worked part time at a senior level, but that was something I negotiated with my employer to move from FT to PT.

I think contracting or consultancy might be your best bet. Or maybe look for a job share?

Yes I'm focusing now on contracts but they tend to be ftc but always full time

I've found as one or two have mentioned you have to be in a role for a whole in a perm company to negotiate into part time /
Job shares.

I am in a senior role and do part time but only just. It is 4 days and although I probably work close to full time hours as those days are long I do not work on my non-working day.

I told them those were my terms when they offered me the job. They were not over the moon about it but luckily for me they had snuggled to fill the role.

I'm not sure a less senior role is the answer because as you say OP places don't want someone too senior for the job. Just find someone who needs your skills and you can set the terms.

Good luck

newjobdilemma · 24/06/2024 08:29

How part time do you want to be? I'd imagine you'd be able to negotiate 4 days in a lot of senior full time roles. I did.

Oblomov24 · 24/06/2024 08:43

This is so sad, that we haven't made more progress. 4 day weeks should be much more the norm, but aren't. Particularly for senior leadership.
I love doing a 4 day week and have done for many years.

I'm just starting my second 3 day a week senior role after too many years Ft slog.

I just tell them that if they want me, it can only be 3 days but I'll be flexible as I can with those. I also say that with my vast experience that 3 productive days of me is the same as 5 of a lesser qualified (and more expensive) ft person.

So with swaggering arrogance I kind of tell them that that's how it will be Smile. Seems to have worked so far. Wish I'd had the confidence to do this much earlier in my career. It's kind of like your L'Oréal moment 😂😂
