Changing from full time to part time

Hello,
I have requested and met with my manager about wanting to change from full time to part time so complete my part time degree.
however I am also at the stage in life where my husband and I would like to start trying for a family. If they grant me my part time request will it look really bad if I turn around and say that I’m pregnant in a few months time?

It won't 'look bad' you are entitled to start your family whenever you want, but your maternity pay will be based on your new part time hours so it seems crazy timing to reduce your hours and then get pregnant (obviously you don't know if it will work out like that) unless money isn't really a factor?

Yes please don’t do this if you are TTC! Your mat pay will be so so low. Can you finish your degree without going part time? Maybe take a month unpaid leave?

Your mat pay was also my first concern here. Of course it doesn’t look bad if you fall pregnant, if anything they will be delighted to have to pay less mat pay.

I agree with others - if you're planning to TTC, you're better off staying full time. Obviously TTC could take a while though

I agree that it won't look bad. If they can accommodate the request, I doubt that they will be that bothered about the reasons behind it.

Is your role very niche, and are you concerned that they will struggle to cover your maternity leave on a part time basis? Tbh, that's their problem rather than yours. How are they currently planning to backfill the hours that you want to cut out?

I think the main implication for going part time before mat leave is probably for you in terms of finances, rather than being a particular challenge for your employer.

Thank you for all your replies.
My mat leave pay is awful so it doesn’t make a huge difference it was more the moral of asking for part time and them having to ‘move things around’ and then getting pregnant. Part of the reason to go part time is because there’s quite a lot going on so I wanted to be in a better position mentally and emotionally.
