WWYD choice of jobs

Looking for some advice because me and DH are totally on the fence and cannot decide what to do.

Job 1: current post, full time but only 0.5FTE is permanent and other half is temporary but rolling. 46k

Job 2: applications close Monday. 0.6FTE permanent. 28k

Job 1: in my home town. Both sets of grandparents live here. Expensive housing. Talking 300k for a 3 bed house in a nice area. The 0.5 of my contract being temporary makes buying a house very uncertain

Job 2: rural but plenty amenities and shops. 1 hr away from grandparents. Very cheap housing. 180k for a nice 3 bed house. Could easily afford a mortgage on DH salary and my 0.6

Job 1: I would be far away from children’s school and working full time I feel like I will miss out on a lot as they grow up (both nursery age). However, we see grandparents every weekend because they are close and they have a great relationship

Job 2: my job would be on same campus as the kids school in the future and part time so the likelihood of me making events is much higher. But we’d go down to one car and DH works 2/4 weekends so I would be carless for these and no good public transport to visit grandparents.

Job 1: the manager is lovely if your face fits but if it doesn’t then you will be micromanaged out. I am scared if I put in an application and don’t get it then my life would be made difficult

Job 2: lovely staff and a supportive, established department

Would you apply for job 2?

Whatever decision you make now isn't permanent.
You could get a additional car / take lessons if that proved to be an issue.

Job 2 seems to be a winner. Perhaps GParents would prefer to move closer to you where it's cheaper and release some funds from their home.

I might lean towards 2 for affordable housing side?

I would go for the job that gives you the security of being able to buy a home for you and your family.

You don't want to be stuck renting forever.

Personally I would apply for job 2.

Job 1 sounds a bit precarious if part of it is only temporary and you have a tricky manager...

Thanks. Neither of our parents would move. We know that for sure but the housing costs and proximity to the kids is a big factor. I’m scared of what will happen if I don’t get it to be honest. Also having to tell management I have an interview too. A colleague of mine on a temporary contract was told if she went for an interview she would have no job to come back to. And I know this isn’t legal but gives you an idea of what’s on the cards

2 in a heart beat. The manager from 1 is the deal breaker for me.

Job 2 all the way.

Even if the first job was full time permanent AND they offered me a free gold plated house I'd still go for the "lovely staff and a supportive, established department" without a shadow of doubt. I've worked for knobhead bosses on power trips and the stress, mind fuck and mental toll just isn't worth it. I've done the same job for 25 years for several different companies, and team I work with now are just fab and my 2 bosses are brilliant. It makes all the difference at work, but also as you end up taking the burden of toxic working environments home with you it really affects the rest of your life too. Job 2 all the way!!
