6 months into new job - to apply for something else?

Hello
i started a new job at the start of Jan and knew pretty much straight away that it wasn’t the job for me. Fast forward to now and I still hate it! My probation is 6 months and I’m due to pass that at the end of this month.
An internal job has come up that I want to apply for. The problem I have is because it’s internal I will have to ask my managers permission to apply. I work in a public sector organisation and for some reason we have to have our line managers approval before we can apply for another role.
I know him now to know that he will be unhappy if I ask. I’m not sure whether to try and stick this job out for longer and hope that something else comes up again at some point or do I ask permission to apply? I just think my manager will make it really awkward especially if I apply and don’t get it. The closing date for the job is the 27th and my manager goes on leave after Wednesday this week so therefore I would need to ask him tomorrow or Wednesday. I don’t feel like I can stay in this role for months again but I felt like that after month 1 and I’ve done 6 now so I guess I could do it if I have to. I don’t really know what I’m asking but just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation? Thanks in advance!

It’s almost expected that you move on in the civil service , I would go for it just say it is an area that you will be more interested in / better match for your skills. They will probably ask on the form if you are still in probation though so hopefully you’ll be passed by then

Thank you @CoastalCalm I don’t work in the civil service but similar I suppose. Thank you, I’m just worried about creating an awkward atmosphere with my boss and if I have to stay here a while longer it might make it even worse than it already is 🙈 I think I will regret it if I don’t go for it though!

NHS ? Just go for it if it gets awkward they'll be other opportunities

Sarah557 · 17/06/2024 20:35

Thank you @pinkwaterbottle9 yes I suppose there will be more opportunities. I don’t handle awkwardness very well but I think I just need to tell myself that it won’t be forever. Think I just need to just do it but feel it’s easier said than done 🙈

I'm sort of in the same boat applying for a job now if I don't get it will be very awkward but I'm so fed up I'm just having to go for it!

If it's the NHS then even a bad manager should realise we're up the creek for staff and it's better to keep you in the NHS in any capacity by not being more or an arse with you because you want to change jobs WITHIN the NHS. Is he knows you're unhappy you'll only leave anyway so he might as well support you in your application rather than the NHS lose you altogether.
(I've not explained that very well but I hope you get what I'm trying to say!)

I've been in a new job 3 months and have literally just had an interview and job offer today for something else. I hated it, it wasn't working and my life is too precious to waste my time!

Check your contract first. In my (private) company you can't apply for an internal job unless you have been in your current role for a year. This applies to all permanent employees, not contractors.
