No CSP- can I refuse to miss work?

Recently discovered my salaried role has no contractual sick pay. So if I miss a day, I will have pay docked (even though I will catch up on the work and meet the same obligations and deadlines).

If I am ill, can I refuse to take the day off sick if my employer advises I take a sick day?

Yes they can. An employer has a responsibility to provide a safe working environment for all of their employees. That means if you are clearly not well they can absolutely send you home.

I should have mentioned that I work remotely, so no safety issue

They could still refuse to allow you to work if off sick. They as an employer also have a duty of care to you, so too unwell to work = too unwell to work, but I can’t imagine in a remote setting how this would ever even come up unless you explicitly said you were unwell they would be none the wiser surely?

I'm thinking of when I'm actually probably too ill to work eg flu or something. If I say I can't work they'll dock pay so thinking of just saying go easy on me today re: calls etc (I have a lot of internal meetings). It's lot of money to lose.

Well that may work if it's a very short lived illness. But in your example of flu that would normally floor people for a week or 2.
Presumably you'd get SSP, not that that's very much!

I think many people who work from home don't call in sick but do the minimum and catch up later e.g. log on for a meeting and then have a rest.
