New job issue

Hi,

What would you do in this situation?

I pondered about an NHS job for a while earlier this year and applied, but withdrew my application. Perfect job for what I wanted to do but not local (85 miles away). Hence why I withdrew. Role is in my profession and I was unhappy in my previous role (not my profession).

Job advertised again (as they didn't fill it) so I phoned the manager. We had a chat and he felt I was a good candidate for the role and asked what my hesitations were. I said distance.

Anyway, he came back after talking it through with another manager and said the role could be worked mainly remotely and would I be able to work 3 days on-site and two from home. As this means forking out for hotels and AirBnB's I was reluctant as it just wasn't worth it if it was going to cost me that much. I applied anyway and figured I could negotiate. Mileage was same as my previous job but I'd be doing it in one trip per week.

Got the job and had another chat with the manager. Didn't accept at first but said I wanted to do two days on site (the role can be done mainly remotely) as it was gong to cost me too much. Again, he went off and returned and said he was happy for me to do two days on-site. I was offering flexibility and said I'd go in any two days of the week and would change them, if needed. I asked a question about it in an email and he replied, again, he was happy with the arrangement. Others also work remotely, although only 2 days a week (but live close by).

I accepted the job based on this. I was willing to stay one night a week. I worked 3 months notice and started the new role at the end of May. I have done 3 days a week on-site for a couple of weeks due to induction. This week I did two on-site and put in my Outlook diary I'd do 2 moving forward. He called me today and said he's noticed I'm only in 2 days for the next few weeks. He then said I have to be there 3 days a week! He didn't seem to recall arranging two days and insisted I go in (from next week) for the 3 full days moving forward.

So, this has put me in a really difficult situation as it will reduce my income even further and I didn't want to be away from home 3 full days as I have a teenager at home who'd be on her own. Plus, 3 days away from home seems a lot longer.

I can't afford it and am annoyed that I've given up a job close to home now. He has gone back on his word.

I still have the email saying he was happy with the two day arrangement. At first, he was insisting I did 3 days but he knew I'd turn the job down if it was 3 days on site.

Is there anything I can do? It's NHS. I'm already looking for another job because of this. They struggle to recruit so you'd think they'd be flexible!! I am in a completely autonomous role so not affecting anyone else.

I'm actually doing a lot in my days in-site that I could do from home - that's the annoying thing!

Forgot to say that I am on my own with my daughter so can't afford to lose this much money.

If you still have the email confirming he was happy with two days, I'd send him this and see what he says. Given the amount of conversations you had about your concerns etc I'm surprised he's "forgotten" about this! Send him the email to remind him and go from there. Have you had your contract yet?

Stropalotopus83 · 13/06/2024 07:52

TBH it sounds like he's trying to cover his own arse. He may have agreed to you doing two days but not got approval from his own managers for this and is now pretending he didn't agree to it simply in the hope you'll just go along with it.

rookiemere · 13/06/2024 08:02

I would send him his email and ask to have a discussion about it.
I bet the company has now changed its stance and decided they want people in 3 days a week.
Unfortunately unless it's in your contract I don't know if you can keep him to what he promised in writing, maybe one for the union if you are a member.

therejustbarely · 13/06/2024 08:34

The email can be considered a contract, I would look at ACAS or speak to your union.

virgocatlover · 13/06/2024 08:37

Staying in hotels/B&Bs every week for a job seems madness to me unless the job really is mega ££££.

Do you have anything in writing? If not it's their word against yours. Look for another job ASAP.

FeelingReallyBlue · 13/06/2024 13:17

No contract as this NHS trust does it all via the offer letter.

I have no choice but to look for another job asap. I was planning on getting the car changed to a micro camper and could manage one night a week but 2 is harder and I don't want to be away from home that much.

They have an inspection coming up so he is a in a foul mood with the other staff. So, I'm reluctant to say anything.

I'm band 7 but will end up worse off than band 3 if paying for 2 nights. I think he will push me to move over and I can't. He doesn't know I'm on my own (no partner).

OP posts:
FeelingReallyBlue · 13/06/2024 13:20

One of the key players in the inspection is off long term sick (had a heart attack) so I think he's pushing stuff on to me.

Honestly send him his own email confirming the 2 days, you have nothing to lose.

Stropalotopus83 · 13/06/2024 16:07

I think you need to at least try and push back on this. You have nothing to lose if you're looking for another job anyway. Just send the email and remind him you took the job on the basis of the written agreement via email that you'll only do two days on site 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, I bet it’s this. Show him the email where he agreed and push back.

FeelingReallyBlue · 19/06/2024 08:14

Checking the email, it wasn't him that said it. It was another manager but who had discussed this with my line manager and they'd both agreed to it. I was sent an email saying this. I accepted the offer on this basis.

Ilm on 6 month probation (even though I have 25 years + exemplary service in the NHS) so feel I am very vulnerable to this.

I think I'll contact HR as I've also been tricked with the travelling costs to the other site.

OP posts:
FeelingReallyBlue · 19/06/2024 08:18

I was told I would get full travelling costs to and from the other site (100 mile round trip) but the system calculates that I only get about 30 miles as I go home after being at the second site. I can understand then deducting any miles that are from the point where I head home, but it doesn't calculate it like that. I end up losing a lot more. So, running car and extra fuel costs, plus hotel bills twice a week is crippling me. I'm on my own with a teen daughter. No family.

Keepthosenamesgoing · 19/06/2024 08:22

I'd speak to HR and say that you'd accepted the offer based on a 2 day week onsite and now you're being asked to do 3. Show them the email.

IDontHateRainbows · 19/06/2024 14:01

Maybe off point but why did you apply to a job so far away in the first place?

I've just emailed HR

Maybe off point but why did you apply to a job so far away in the first place?

My old job wasn't my field. The place was in a mess and undergoing transformation so I felt at risk. I had applied for the new job, previously, but pulled out. Distance was the reason I pulled out (and that I didn't want to relocate). They got in touch and asked what my reservations were and this is how I ended up being offered the role 2 days on-site and 3 days at home.

The mileage is actually the same as the total mileage (5 days a week) of my old job - it's just that I am doing it over 2 days, not 5.

FeelingReallyBlue · 20/06/2024 17:57

The trust had struggled to recruit to this post but it was ideal for my career direction. I actually like the job - it suits me - so I'm a bit down about the 3 day thing!

I remember your original post about this, I'm sorry it's gone so badly.

Definitely share the original email with him - you were told it was OK, so they'll have to make it OK. Are you a member of a union?

Is there anyone that you work with that would be glad of a lodger once per week? I bet there is.
