My ds is 18, left college last June 2023, after gaining three A'levels. All through school he was bullied, someone urinated in his shoes when they were changing for games, had black eyes, followed home, you name it, but not once did he feign illness to have a day off, infact he has never had a day off primary school, high school or college, except for covid. Should of mentioned he is autistic, level 1. ...Anyway, he is really struggling to get an apprenticeship, he's looking for mechanical or electrical engineering, joinery, anything that involves working with his hands and problem solving. Currently he is working part time in a supermarket , he hates it, but knows he has to earn some money. He drives and has his own car. Every apprenticeship he has applied for, he never hears anything back, & has the qualifications they ask for...His older brother helped with his C.V., ( he knows all about that) , he went into the job centre asking for advice but was turned away, saying they only deal with benefit claims. The two friends he did have have gone away to uni, apart from working at the supermarket he is home all the time. He is desperate to have a friend again. We have suggested every club, hobby etc where he could meet someone but he turns everything down.
He is such a lovely caring young man, but cannot seem to get a good start in life...has anyone got any advice, or guidance, me and my husband worry about him so much and feel helpless.

Your local college or authority should have a careers service that gives unbiased advice, they can go through his CV, do mock interviews, give advice etc. The college or training agency where the apprenticeship is through should also be able to help with an employer and putting him in touch, they usually have specific staff for this as it's in their best interests to get the learner and the funding.
(I work in a college in further education).
Good luck!
