Is there anywhere you can go to do a course in till training? I mean how to operate a till, take card payments, all that kind of stuff?

No, it'll be taught I house by the employer.

Every till system is also slightly different - the Tesco one and the Post Office ones will be more complex than the one at my local pub or the local corner shop.

If you get a job in retail, they'll train you before they let you lose on the shop floor.

If you want it because you're opening your own business, the till provider might offer you training/support (would depend on where you bought it from, though. Obviously, if you bought one online from an office supply chain, that probably won't come with training but signing up for a lease/contract one might include some)

The employer will train you.

Job centres do run training sessions on basic Employability skills that might include something like this if you are trying to get a job and wanting to show some experience.

Supermarket till operation isn't very different from Supermarket self-service though.

Lovelygreen24 · 07/06/2024 18:48

All the machines are quite different. If you want a retail job, just say you have till experience and then on your first day say "this is different to the one I used". They'll teach your anyway but better to lie and say you know how to do it just to get the door in the door. If you can use a phone you can operate a till

Hotnamehere · 07/06/2024 18:51

Most tills are very easy to operate these days. All shops will use different systems though.

Weallnamechangesometimes · 07/06/2024 18:54

If you're talking about supermarkets then they're not that different from the self service tills to be honest. Just slightly less annoying as they're not weighing the bagging area.

Hotnamehere · 07/06/2024 18:59

If you can use a self service till you can use a till. Scan, press buttons, that's about it.

Back in the day I worked at Boots and did all the till training for new staff at our branch.
They will train you as part of your induction and likely you will have a buddy or someone shadowing you before you are let loose on your own.
