New Job - Smart Casual help!?!

Boofips · 07/06/2024 09:10

I'm starting a new job as administrator at a leisure park in just over a week.
When I asked about uniform I was told smart casual although they provide branded polo shirts and fleece.
Would black jeans be considered smart casual?!
I noticed during my interview that the member of staff I'm replacing was wearing trainers and leggings but I don't feel quite right turning up in those on my first day!

I need something comfy and practical. I won't be sat at a desk all day and will be outdoors quite a bit.

It's been a while since I started a new job and im so excited to have found this position I really don't want to start off wrong.

Help please!!

If it were me I would buy some navy/dark trouser trousers (ie not leggings or jeans) from Next/M&S or similar and just have them as my 'work trousers' - Not over smart but not scruffy. So ticks both boxes. But also keeps your own casual clothes as 'not at work' clothes. and keeps your usual casual wardrobe for outside work times.

Given that they're providing a polo top and fleece, I don't think their idea of smart casual is most people's! Black jeans sounds fine.

Black jeans sounds fine or Uniqlo do some great work trousers I think it's the EZY range, they have elasticated backs so comfortable if outside and need to move around, my go to work shoe are Clarks Hamble Oak brogues. They are flat and comfortable so fine on grass.

As it's a leisure centre I'd read the 'smart' part of smart casual to mean no rips or scruffy clothes, smarter jeans with no rips and clean trainers is also probably fine.

Black jeans sound fine, I’d wear them to start with and once you’re a bit more settled you might find leggings are fine.

Wide leg black tailored trousers would be my choice; jeans or, even worse, leggings will make the polo/fleece combination look rather too casual, I would have thought... However, I would hazard that if they are supplying a polo and fleece to be used as work wear, that their idea of smart-casual is rather different to mine!

With the right shoes, yes, they're smart enough from the sound of it. I would be looking at some "work" style black straight leg or slim fit trousers just to be safe. Jeans once you know the score.

It's a leisure centre not an office - so I agree smart means clean with no rips! Not office wear trousers.

Thanks for all your replies!

Its a leisure park so think holiday lodges, fishing lakes, horse stables etc.

Whilst my job will be predominantly in the office, I will be out walking around the site each day and popping into the onsite restaurant for parts of my role.

I'm going to get some comfy but smart black trousers for the first day I think, I also have a pair of incredibly comfy ankle boots that might be a bit more suitable for first day impressions!
