Are there any part time jobs out there that pay a decent salary?

I am thinking of returning to work after 4 years being a SAHM and would like to work part time so I can still see my kids. After a search for part time jobs out there, there only appears to be the usual bar staff, receptionist/admin, call centre, care jobs.
Is the only chance of getting professional part time work (I used to work in IT audit/management for a big 5 company) by working full time at first and negotiating a part time deal? Has anyone managed to find a well paid part time job without working full time first?
It seems that the lack of part time jobs is because more men dont work part time and so create more part time openings, because they dont drop work more often to raise kids.
It's a bit disappointing - I thought times had moved on a bit and people were keener to make more room in their lives for non-work activities. It also seems that employers are still anti-flexible working aswell.
I would rather not work full time and may decide not to work at all than not be with my kids more often. And this country wonders why there's still a huge untapped workforce (comprised mainly of women).

How about a job-share? I think you can always enquire about job-share even when applying for a full-time post.

yep, that's the trap most of us are in! Public sector can be better, depending on location and how flexible they need to be in order to get people - London area much easier ime. could you freelance in what you used to to or do interim stuff?

I am an Usborne Book representative, selling childrens books to schools, friends, play schools, nurseries etc. I have 2 young children and it works great. You can take your kids with you if you like. You can put as much in to it as you want with no ties . if your interested I'll tell you more. Please ask me any questions , I'll be happy to give you the details.

I work part-time as a PA, very well paid. I found it through a recruitment agency, perhaps you could register with a few and see if anything comes up?

I managed to get a part time IT job after being made redundant.Although it tooka while to find and was advertised asfull time. I was lucky in that my skills were exactly what they were looking for. I had to up my hours to the equivalent of 4 days a week to get it but following another spell of maternity leave have got it back down to the equivalent of 3 days a week.

Do you really want part-time, or could what you're looking for be termed as 'school-friendly' hours? i.e. finishing early some days rather than not going in at all? You could apply for full-time jobs and then request that you finish early 3 days a week intime to get home for school pick-up. I found this approach got me further than saying 'part-time'.

I work in accounts. Loads of part time work.
Certain agencies are very pro p/t, others don't want to know. My last 3 jobs have all been p/t. At a good salary. Great job.

I work every morning at the local primary school and love it. Ok its not highly paid but I am off when DDs are off and I get plenty of holiday/free time. This way I do not have to worry about child minding or the long summer holidays.

They occassionally ask me to do an afternoon which is up to me.

try looking at public sector jobs. the council i work for will consider j/s or p/t requests from succesful applicants even if the job has initially been advertised as f/t. obviously depends on the indvidual requirements of the job but worth a go
