quick salary one...

Hi all,

If an expected salary for a role is advertised as 'from 37K' - what do we think would be a realistic figure when asked to give expectations? 40k? Might 45k be too punchy?! 😉

It's a corporate that would be more than able to 'afford' to pay more - however, there would of course be pay brackets and 45k would be moving towards the upper end with competitive companies, if that makes sense?

Thanks so much.

I would ask for no less than £45k, good luck!

leaningtowerofplant · 04/06/2024 16:26

Thanks @Changingplace - I'm just never quite sure if you put down too high a figure potential employers might just presume it's the minimum you need, and disregard you if it's more than they've budgeted for!

I could manage on 40k though obviously 45 would be better 😂

Ask for 45k, they can only say no.

SomeonTookMyAnonymousUserName · 04/06/2024 16:31

If you can reference other roles of a similar level with a £45k salary, it's reasonable to cite them and ask. They may agree or maybe negotiate and meet you half way

GiantRoadPuzzle · 04/06/2024 19:47

I’d go in at least 50k and expect negotiation down.

MathsFiend · 04/06/2024 19:57

In our work, the range is based on market reference. The minimum is 80% of the market reference. If this organisation worked similarly, then their market reference for that role would be £46.25k. So I’d suggest that’s what the role is typically worth.

As PP said, start at £50k for negotiations

roses2 · 04/06/2024 20:21

if you go in at £50k you risk pricing yourself out if it’s well above similar jobs. HR will likely sound you out and give you a range in the initial screening call.

I would go in at the higher of either 20% more than my current salary or average rate for that role at other companies.

Thank you all. Tbh I’d be laughed out of the room asking for 50k - it’s just not a realistic number for the role unfortunately!
The range is more like 35-45k…

Your worries aren't unfounded. I've had a few pre-interview screening chats where they couldn't meet my salary expectations so we didn't go forward to interview. If someone says they're looking for £45k and their max is £40k, they'll assume if you got the job you'd soon be off looking for more.

Have you thought about what's the minimum you would take? I'd get that really clear and then try to sound them out as to how flexible the salary band is. You can then decide whether to go in a few k higher and maybe get it, or just be straight that you will take £x but no less.

£45k, but depending on total reward package (benefits, pension, bonus etc)
