New job and pregnant!

So I've finally got a job after applying since September when my son started school. I start tomorrow. Found out yesterday that I'm 5 weeks pregnant. We've been trying for 3 years. I'm already so tired and the nausea has started. With my last pregnancy, by 8 weeks I had to tell my boss because I was so ill. I know I'm not entitled to any maternity pay which is fine. Any advice? How long should I try to keep it a secret for? I feel like they're gonna be pissed😬🤦‍♀️

oh congratulations
mostly people leave it for the 12 week point. see how you go, particularly as you cannot claim any maternity pay

Thank you😊Yeah I guess that makes sense. Will just have to see how the nausea goes. I'm so nervous to start now!

I wouldn't worry.

This is about your future and family.....it's far bigger than a job.
Wait until you have to tell them. Hopefully they will understand.

How did it go?

I told them at 8 weeks and promptly lost my job🤦‍♀️luckily we're alright without the extra income but it was pretty annoying still!

Even though you had less than 2 years service you were in a protected category due to your pregnancy. If you believe you were let go due to your protected characteristic then you have grounds to take them to employment tribunal x

S*it that sucks! Are you not taking them to court?

MarkandElizabethForever · 15/09/2024 08:02

Nah I can't be bothered with the hassle tbh. They were clever with their reasoning to me behind it too. I'm quite glad I don't work for a company that treats people like that anyway!

i was pretty much shoved out the door, I had a good job at an asset management firm as well and they just wanted me gone as soon as I told them. I was completely honest and told them at my induction. ACAS couldn’t do anything. Nobody gave a shit and I didn’t have the mental strength to fight as I was too worried about any stress on my baby. This is long gone now and my baby is now a teenager. All I can say is good luck and I hope they’re more understanding.
