New boss - has she been brought in to make us quit?

New manager has been in the role 3 months. They have 5 line reports and only one is not complaining about the treatment we are getting. Micromanagement, adding meaningless tasks which will have little business impact, throwing us under the bus during escalations and in front of senior leaders and basically treating us like we’re in nursery school. This person is tasking us with their tasks and we are all now looking for new jobs. Is there a management technique that tries to make quit so they don’t have to pay out redundancies? Business is not too good and staff in our dept were being encouraged to look for roles in the bigger arm of our company.
we are looking for new Jobs but may take a while as we are all in senior positions.

I’m in a similar situation. It feels deliberate to make us all unhappy. But a new hire has already left because of it. I’ve been job hunting and thinking I’ll hand in my notice and take a break due to the stress. A lot of others are job hunting too.

I don’t think it’s a deliberate plan as such, more a we don’t care as long as the job gets done approach.
I’ve come across many completely inappropriate managers in my time. Lots of whom have no man management skills.
I was thinking about this last week. Why isn’t anything done when managers cannot retain staff? Why are they never held accountable for high staff turnover?

Yes it deliberate to save paying redundancy.

Slap a letter in saying your going through transition at the moment and watch her sweat.

I’d fake stress and long term sickness before leaving if I was senior and been in a job for many years. I wouldn’t give up that security easily, quitting would be the last resort possible.

potential management techniques that could be at play:

Pushing for voluntary resignations: Some companies may subtly encourage employees to leave by creating a hostile work environment or making the work overly burdensome. This is often a cost-saving measure since it avoids the need to pay severance packages.

Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs): Sometimes, a manager may put employees on PIPs with unrealistic expectations or requirements, essentially setting them up for failure and justifying termination.

Isolation and alienation: Managers may intentionally isolate certain employees, limit their responsibilities, or exclude them from important projects or meetings, making them feel undervalued and pushing them to leave.

Undermining and discrediting: Managers might undermine employees' work, take credit for their accomplishments, or discredit them in front of colleagues or senior leaders, eroding their morale and motivation to stay.

Excessive monitoring and scrutiny: Micromanagement, constant monitoring of work, and excessive scrutiny of minor errors can create stress and frustration, leading employees to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Just do the bare minimum if you want to leave, they'll have no choice to turf you eventually, you aren't staying so there is no point working like a dog anymore - enjoy your summer!

I’m leaving a job in a few weeks because of a manager. I’ve been in the role 5 years. 2 years ago this new manager started, first year wasn’t too bad, not to start with I was the one saying “give them them benefit of the doubt they are new”

This year I’ve been made to eat my words, definitely chooses favourites, micromanages, speaks to you as if you are a child, passive aggressive e-mails every week, tells you off for something other people do blatantly. I can’t say anything to them, it gets twisted into something negative, a dig at me. I’ve had enough and am moving and I cannot wait. It’s ground me down.

Bananachip2023 · 01/06/2024 23:19

@sweetkitty that sounds so much like my manager. Did you find another job? I don’t have anywhere to go yet, so haven’t decided whether to quit with nowhere to go (have some self employed work to last me some time) or whether to stay until I find another job

Runituptheflagpole · 05/06/2024 12:26

Thanks. I had my first interview yesterday! Hope I can get out the place. The workload is becoming unmanageable. I do work that makes business sense but not the tasks I’m being given (some not even in realm of my area of expertise).
