Anyone understand loans in the Civil Service?

I want to apply for a lateral loan but my manager can't let me go because we are too under resourced, the receiving department has said (and my manager agreed) I can go if I basically say I don't intend to return, which enables my home department to recruit for my replacement.

The loan is for 2 years, potential to extend to 3, and is just generally known for living off loans so it could just keep getting extended, it's a pretty standard role every department needs so it's unusual it's a loan and has a good argument for existence!

I am a natural worrier so this makes me feel uncomfortable. I am a 5+ year civil servant, I've been advised if the role ends I will be sent back to my home department who would be obligated to redeploy me, or they'd make me redundant but have heard this is quite rare as it is expensive (I'm a G6). Tbh I have never stayed in a role longer than 3 years so I'm sure I would end up moving myself, but just wanted to know if anyone was familiar with this and experienced it? Is the advice I've been given accurate in your experience? Would this be a silly thing to do?

Would you be willing to name the receiving department?

You are taking a risk but you know that you have to apply for a job before the loan ends.

High demand G6 role? Come on, you're never going to be made redundant. Worst case, you might be plonked temporarily into a department you aren't familiar with, but if you've got high-demand skills, it won't be for long. I say go for it, you never know what opportunity might come along next.

@theodozya MOJ.

@Harassedevictee whilst I absolutely would try, I'm trying to work out what would happen if I was unsuccessful getting something before the loan runs out (catastrophising!)

@PonyPatter44 can you end up being sent to a different department if your home department's redeployment pool can't house you? Does it have to be where you are currently pinned in terms of location?
