Is it normal to get probation extended due to annual leave?

I'm currently in my probationary period, and asked my manager if I could take a week off during towards the end of the probation. He approved it, but mentioned that he will need to extended my probation by an additional week to cover it.

I've never had this happen in other jobs before - is this ok or is it a bad sign that I might not pass my probation? I feel guilty about having the week off now.

I remember this happening to a friend of mine quite a few years ago but it was because she had taken about 5 weeks leave before the end of her probation (they were all pre-booked before starting the role)

I've never known it happen for just 1 week of leave - sounds like a red flag to me! Are they ok to work for in general or are they quite strict to work for?

I've not heard of that and have taken holiday in probation period before, so not sure what that's about. I don't think it's necessarily a bad sign but it seems an odd practice.

It does sound odd. I’d be a bit anxious about passing probation tbh.

Not normal in our place. It would only be extended if there were performance issues, but then it would be extended by more than a week as that is too short a time period to prove yourself. Is there some work that needs completed that needs the extra week?

Manager maybe ill informed. I'd ask if there is any issues with passing probation. I'd review your company's probation policy. It's best practice that issues be flagged up at the 3 month point and fully documented so that it's not a surprise if you don't pass probation.

I'd play a fairly wide eyed " you haven't raised any issues with me so I was under the impression that all was fine". One week extension will not make a difference to whether or not they do or don't think you should pass. It sounds like the manager being a prick which from your point of view is not a good sign.

Probation is bollocks anyway. They can get rid of you without reason in the uk ( if no protected characteristics) for the first 2 years but company policies often make it difficult to get rid of employees at all. My firm have made it really hard for me when I needed to boot someone during probationary period and they were a pathological liar.

Ahh I'm really anxious now! My manager mentioned that it would be HR that would want the probation extended - so it seems it's an internal policy rather than his decision? There's nothing in my contract though about reasons for extended probation. The extension was just my manager pushing my review meeting back by a week, rather than a formal letter/email from HR (although maybe that is to come). They company is otherwise very positive to work for, and I had a 3 month review last week with my line manager which went well - he gave me positive feedback and shared that he had had positive feedback from the team. The only piece of improvement he gave was for me to start on doing a certain type of project that is part of my role that I've not had the chance to yet, so he's making sure I get the opportunity in the next few weeks.

The department head has also been in touch about the company paying for my travel and an overnight stay to visit their office in London (I'm remote based) so that I can meet the team, which I had hoped was a positive sign.
