Breach of notice period? Leaving teaching

I’m hoping to receive an offer for a role in academia very soon to start in October. The recruitment dates for academia and the notice period for teaching (a term) just don’t seem to match up at all.

The new role would be my dream job, but I should give a term’s notice. I am a part-time teacher (while pursuing my research) so not as difficult to replace as a full time teacher. I would be able to hopefully give notice at half term, with my last day of employment to be the beginning of October half term.

What are the likely outcomes here? Will I be allowed to leave? What have other people done who have left teaching to pursue other careers? Teaching has unusually long notice periods. I would be really grateful to hear from you!

I would tell the now. You run the risk of them not wanting you back in September but it's better than leaving them in the lurch.

Are you sure that it's a full term for your notice? Does your school follow the burgundy book? If so, you can hand your resignation in up to May 31st, in order to leave August 31st. Any later (before 31st Oct) and it would be 31st December.

If it’s a term’s notice, you are looking at Xmas. It’s a FULL term unless you negotiate but you should be able to negotiate.

It’s an independent school and it’s stated clearly in the contract. I will be very sorry to let my lovely department down, but equally this is my dream job and as far as my new employer is concerned four month’s notice is plenty…

Do you think so? What might that negotiation look like? It is really tricky if one is looking to leave teaching; the notice periods are completely out of sync with any other type of job.

@ThisQuaintNavySquid the bottom line for an employer is how do I make an employee come into work during their notice period. The answer is they can’t.
What an employer can do is pursue a breach of contract claim, but the costs may not be worth it.

In your position I would give notice as soon as you can and advise them your last day will be xxxxxx.
