Hello,
Just started a new job which is mainly a remote working job - band 7. It's 100 miles away from my home but I'm staying over one night a week and spending two working days there, with the rest remote.

They seem open to me working my 37.5hrs over 4 days, or a bit different.

Just looking for ideas if anyone does this, especially if mainly remote.

I don't as I'm part-time but I'm in a large community team and several staff do, including the team lead.
They work 8-6 and just arrange their diaries accordingly
They tend to have Mondays or Fridays off as they are the quieter days in terms of meetings etc

I meant to add 1 of the staff has a bit of a commute and does find it quite a long day and I see you will have 100 mile trip on 2 days and stay overnight.
If they seem quite flexible could you stick with 5 days but work slightly longer hours on your wfh days that would allow you to finish early on your 2nd in person day so you still get home at a decent time?

I do, albeit not remotely.

0800-1800 3 days, 0800-1730 1 day, 30 minute lunches and a Wednesday off.

Only just started it, but enjoying not doing more than 2 days in a row so far!

I am working over two sites. One is my 'base' so they have to give me the travel time (and costs) for visiting the second one so I'll go there for the second day. As I can leave at 3pm, I will get home by 5pm.

I think a Monday or Friday would be better for me as I would prefer the long weekend.

They have to give me the travel time for getting myself to and from the other site - so 3 hours. I'm thinking of driving to the other site the night before and staying close to there so I can start at 8am and definitely be gone by 3pm so I can get across to home by 3pm. I shouldn't be starting until 10am at this site (due to the travel time I'm given) and I'd still leave at 3pm. It just means I'll have extra time to take off somewhere else.

I do 8-6 compressed days and have Friday off. I love it. I do one 1/2 days in and the rest remote. It’s easy to do the longer days at home as your not commuting in etc. go for it, you won’t regret it.

Definitely consider not working on a Monday - I worked for the NHS previously, and this meant I was able to take bank holiday leave when it suited me.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. I've noticed the extra time I have not driving in each day. Makes a difference!

Good point!

I like the idea of of 9 day fortnights so you do slightly longer days and get every other Friday off. My brother’s company does that in Canada for everyone. It wouldn’t work in my current nhs role as I’m in a provider but I know it’s common in other nhs arms.

ObliviousCoalmine · 24/05/2024 20:49

I work 37 hours over 3.5 days. 8-6 twice, 8-8 and 8-1.30. All remote. It's been really beneficial to my work/life balance.
