What is a good uk salary?

The salaries in this country are a bit underwhelming. On top of the high tax rates, what is even considered a good to very good salary in this country these days? I believe anything from £38k to £50k to be good to very good salaries. Anything from £60k to £80k to be excellent. Beyond that you are in the small percentage of the country who are lucky.

Very good? I'd say £150,000.

ViciousCurrentBun · 19/05/2024 15:56

Top 10% of earners so earning more than 90% of the population would be a good salary regardless of outgoings which is what people tend to focus on. That puts you at close to 68k.

kitsuneghost · 19/05/2024 15:59

I would say good is over 30k

anicecuppateaa · 19/05/2024 16:00

As always, completely depends where in the UK you live. £60-80k up north, yes very good. £60-80k in London would be tight.

Why regardless of outgoings?

HelpMeGetThrough · 19/05/2024 16:04

On here, it will be nothing less than the magic £100k

K0OLA1D · 19/05/2024 16:07

I'm on just over 30k. DP is on just under. We manage to save a tiny bit, have holidays, get credit when needed and own our own home.

I'd say we were doing OK. Obviously it would be shit if we lived anywhere down south.

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 19/05/2024 16:10

Tell us what outgoings the salary has to cover and we can make a better guess

MidnightMeltdown · 19/05/2024 16:11

The average salary for full time work was 42k last year. The median salary was around 35k.

However, it depends on where you live. In London the median salary is 44k.

Based on this, I would say that a good salary is over 50k. Of course this will be better if you don't live in London.

Jamiedodgers · 19/05/2024 16:13

Mumsnet is massively skewed with high earners or those pretend to be high income earners. Also it depends on where you live and your household make up (how many are working, how many dependants?). Where I am up north and in my social circle, earning over £40k is considered quite decent

mitogoshi · 19/05/2024 16:15

Depends where you live, and if you already own a home, in cheaper places over £60k gets you a decent standard of living so I'd classify as good, very good £80k excellent £100k whereas in London in particular you need to be earning at least 50% more due to housing costs

PickledPurplePickle · 19/05/2024 16:17

Not lucky, worked and studied bloody hard to get there

Mayhemmumma · 19/05/2024 16:19

I think of good as 50k plus

I'm on 45 pro rata plus some private work.

I can only dream of 100!
And live in the south so very expensive here.

What about 80k outside of london and commuting in?

I think 70k+ is good.
Our combined income is 50k and we have hardly any luxuries and an empty account by the end of the month.

This is me, it is plenty, although I mostly WFH, if I had to regularly commute in my salary would be eaten up quickly.

Bigredpants · 27/05/2024 09:25

To me. South East public sector. Good is 40+ Very good 60+.

Startingagainandagain · 27/05/2024 09:38

I would say that 50-65K is good and above that very good :).

But it all depends of where you live and what your circumstances are.

My full time salary (I work 3 days) equivalent is £45K for a job with a London-based charity which I think is absolute rubbish as they asked me to commute once a week, so I am looking for a new job.

This isn’t quite true though for the majority. A lot of people work and study hard and are in hard low paid jobs.

I have done both types of jobs, worked in nhs for years and now work for civil service and moving up the ladder and I can tell you no one worked harder than me at the time I was a dogs body in the nhs and despite completing my MA there was absolutely no movement in that job despite 14.5 hour days on my feet.

Muddle200 · 27/05/2024 12:39

All depends where you live but with high house prices things are not as good as they were a generation ago

Do you live on outskirts of London?

Quite. Mumsnet is an odd demographic of posters earning six figures in 'demanding' jobs while married to 'high earner' husbands.

piejetyellow · 27/05/2024 12:56

@OneSparklyGoldBear no, Midlands.

21andon · 27/05/2024 12:58

All I know is I have a lot less disposable income on a salary I would consider very good (particularly in terms of joint household income) than I think I should have!
