I'm starting a new job and was wondering if anyone has any tips for getting through the probation period etc.

What kind of job is it?

Primary goal when you start a new job is passing probation as you have mentioned. A few tips that I can think of are

  1. Have a positive can to attitude at all times. Even if at times you do not feel it deep inside.
  2. Do what you are told by your manager. Yes you can gently question the why's at an early stage in employment but the bottom line is the managers word goes
  3. If you have WFH days make sure you stay at your desk other than essential short durations away. They do not know you so you need to build up their trust from scratch
  4. From time to time try and ask good questions that slightly go beyond the job you are doing. This shows you have interest in the topic. Ask them even if you do not really care about the answer it's about building an image of yourself.
  5. Be pleasant with everybody and have good manners.
  6. Be on time for EVERY shift meaning you are ready to start at that time rather than taking your coat off and turning on the computer.

I can probably think of a few more when I have a bit more time. As the months pass and you hopefully pass probation you can start to take your foot off the gas but the image you convey over the first month ish is very important.
