I feel disheartened by seeing the number of people apply for just one position in Linkedin.
I am after office roles.

Ignore the numbers on LinkedIn. Many of those people will be totally unsuitable IME.

Charlie2121 · 18/05/2024 03:41

The application data on LinkedIn is flawed. It counts people who have clicked on the application link to review the job description not just those who actually went through the whole process and applied. They are massively inflated numbers.

Thank you for your reply. Please may I ask how you know this information? I just assumed that Linkedin number was the number of actual applicants.

Absolutely correct

Because we use LinkedIn for roles and can see the number that actually apply vs what Linkedin say have applied,

I applied for a job via linked in and heard nothing. I then went directly through the company's website and was contacted. I don't have faith in linked in at all.

And to answer your question, of course you can get a job in your mid 30s. I was in my 40s when I was made redundant and moved companies.

GoingRoundThatBlockAgain · 18/05/2024 05:34

I would also look at who are the big employers in your town and go direct to their websites and look at vacancies. Or use Indeed to search for local roles. LinkedIn isn’t the only way.

If a job is in London and above the salary needed for a skilled worker visa, it attracts dozens of applications from countries around the world.

I automatically exclude anyone from abroad because no-one with the skills I'm looking for would move country for £45k. That takes out 95%. Last job ad, I had 50 applicants within a day, only two were relevant One was brilliant and is now our marketing exec.

Don't lose heart. What exactly are you looking for?

newjobdilemma · 18/05/2024 08:50

What has being in your mid 30s got to do with anything? I'm the same age and would hope we're still a long way off age discrimination!

Thank you 😊 I am after HR Assistant roles. Any advice?

I suspect its not the age that is relevant but possibly a lack of experience/long time out of the job market at that age the OP is worrying about.

My SIL is in a similar position currently, she's in her early 30s and apart from a part time shop job between the ages of 18 - 22 while she lived with her parents she's been a SAHM for the last 10 years and the youngest is starting school in Sep. She's wanting to get a job but other than literally a Saturday job 10 years ago she's basically now applying for her first job in her 30s.

Ladymuck2022 · 19/05/2024 23:07

The people who really focus on it are the ones to lose out.

you know the job seekers who focus on age. I feel so ill types.

I attended an open day in January 24 so many wanted to rub shoulders sympathetically in we’re so old who would want us. But I felt differently.

us oldies - a blooming negative talk. Stop it.

stinkylionita · 19/05/2024 23:12

@Itsallok could you please give an example of what these different numbers would look like to give an idea of how inflated? Are we talking like 1 applicant for every 10 applicants listed? More? Less? I've also been disheartened by this same thing.

OP is mid thirties 😂😂😂

Surely she's more worried about not having ENOUGH experience?

As many as 10 times the actual applications. Because it just records people opening the ad
