Another job I didn't get (must pray harder !)

This was a position with an outfit called ChristianJobs.co.uk (they really exist).

The application was via LinkedIn, where the following question was asked and impossible to avoid. It was Yes or No with no option to say "prefer not to say"

I've attached a screenshot for the "photos or it never happened" response.

Now personally, I'm quite happy in Hell (ain't a bad place to be). However am I alone in wondering how appropriate this question is in the UK ? Especially as I note the lack of the usual "this will only be used for monitoring etc etc" disclaimer.

Could I be in line for some compo ?

(LinkedIn is owned and operated by Microsoft - for whom the "rest of the world" is anywhere outside Redmond).

? Do you mean compensation?

If so, then no. You are on a site for Christian jobs. What did you expect?

PandaG · 17/05/2024 19:26

There are jobs for which it is a requirement to be a practising Christian - eg youth or children's worker, so perfectly reasonable for that to be a question.

TeaandScandal · 17/05/2024 19:29

Why would you be due compensation? Confused

Nospecialcharactersplease · 17/05/2024 19:29

No compensation - employers with an ethos based on religion or belief and exempt from religious discrimination legislation.

It is an entirely appropriate question to ask and if you aren’t comfortable with it then you aren’t the right person to work there.

And I say this as an atheist who worked for a religious organisation and was once asked this question in a job interview.

Oblomov24 · 17/05/2024 19:36

I think it's perfectly fine for a Christian company to ask if you are a Christian too. A devil worshipper might not be a good fit.

You need to locate the privacy notice and find out what their legal basis is for collecting that information, often special category data (which this is) is on explicit consent, if that's the case, this would not meet the expected standard for explicit in my opinion due to the balance of power. They may be relying on another basis though.

(UK GDPR I'm referring to)

Clubtropicanna · 17/05/2024 19:44

Don’t be silly OP.

Eg Christian youth worker position — you need to be a Christian.

Juggling teacher — you have to be able to juggle.

What’s the problem?!

Zonder · 17/05/2024 19:47

Why were you looking on a Christian job site? Was it just to find something to poke fun at?

Wasywasydoodah · 17/05/2024 19:47

some jobs need you to have a faith. It’s down to the job description, not the organisation though. So : you need to be a practicing christian to be a vicar, but not to be the administrator
