can someone tell me how these work in the NHS and how long you need to be on one for in order to be made permanent? i will have been on a fixed term contract for 2 years this sept 2024?

After two years service, you would be entitled to a redundancy payment if the contract ends.

After 4 years, you are considered permanent, but i think that's quite meaningless anyway.

I was on a rolling 1 year temp contract in same job and after 4 years HR said my contract had to be made permanent

Assuming the NHS doesn’t have any specific localised arrangements that might better this, the legal position is that If you have been continuously employed for four years or more on a series of fixed- term contracts, you will be automatically treated as a permanent employee unless your employer can otherwise justify the use of successive fixed-term contracts.

@purpledagger so if offered redundancy, will it be for the years worked in my fixed term contract or since starting nhs which will be 2009?

it will be based on your continuous service,

purpledagger · 17/05/2024 06:53

.... so 2009, providing you haven't had a break in service.
