Thinking about leaving -should I tell current boss?

First time poster but need some advice off please.

To cut a very long story short, I work with a woman who is so unbearably lazy and rude it is having a negative impact on my mental health. It came to a head this week where I felt she massively undermined me in front of more junior staff and instigated what felt like a pile on on me.

Management are aware but seem unwilling or unable to do anything about it. I do love the company and other than this woman everyone is lovely but she will never change and I can't work with her anymore so I feel like I need to move on. I don't want to raise a grievance as I am not sure what this will achieve other than her being even more unpleasant than usual, other people have complained about her and nothing changes.

My question is, should I tell my line manager (who I get on very well with) in advance that I am looking for a new role because of her? In an ideal world I would move to an internal job but it is a small company and they don't come up often, but roles have been created to stop talented members of staff leaving before and I know I am well thought of. I have applied for a few roles over the weekend so should I wait for those to pan out before I tell them how unhappy I am and that I want to move? I don't want to look like I am throwing a hissy fit or making threats but at the same time I would like the chance to stay with the company.

Thanks in advance for any wise words.

If you know management are useless, say nothing.

Find a new role, exit without drama - you have enough of that thanks to your toxic colleague.

Telling your manager your plans will not advance/help you - silence is best here, especially if as you say, a grievance wouldnt change things.

Why do you want to tell them? So they create a role for you? So they do something about her? If the first they can do that once you tell them you have found a new job, the second they haven’t done anything even with you raising concerns so not sure they would do anything. What if you tell them and they don’t find a role for you? How long could you stay under those conditions

I think asking your manager about potential to move internally would be fine unless there's another process for internal moves. I wouldn't share your external job search though.

I would ask your manager if there are any internal roles coming up, but not mention your other job searching :)

No, don't

Ask if there are any internal position as you would like to broaden horizons, new experience blah blah

Keep applying for external roles. If you are offered one take it to the table at your current place and use as a negotiating tactic.

Don't mention the difficult person

Thanks all for the advice.

I think you are all right, I will look for something else and then leave. If at that point they want to create something for me then i can go from there. Part of my reason for wanting to leave is I can't bear the drama and sense of ill feeling she creates so it would be a bit silly if I threatened to leave and created a load of drama myself, it would make things even more unpleasant!

I will just keep my thoughts to myself, smile and be professional, crack on with an escape plan and hope karma catches up with her =)

God no. She does not have your best interests at heart.

If there’s a team you would like to move to or skill you would like to use, perhaps you can see a gap where the company would benefit you could speak to your manager about that as you will start to get a sense of the likelihood of an internal move ?
