How many days in office do you think of when you hear the term ‘hybrid working’?

For me, I think 1-2 days in the office. But is that unrealistic now?

Certainly not 4, which is what I used to have pre Covid in many companies.

I’m looking for a new role at the moment and I’m trying to get a sense of what’s now realistic. I’m not keen on being in the office 3 days a week and my type of job can be done from home. Also being a mum, my priority is the maximise the time I can spend with my child even if it means taking a slightly lower paid job.

Thanks everyone.

2 day a week I would be happy with. Somehow 3 days a week tips it over in my mind into being too much! But appreciate this is now the norm of hybrid working. I’ll just have to balance it up with office location, salary, team, role etc.

We get London weighting and so we have to be in the office over 50%. Employer dictates 60% so we have to be in for 3 days a week.

No averaging (which is annoying).

This seems quite common for London offices of big employers.

Where are you based?

OddBoots · 08/05/2024 20:15

Ours is pretty strict, in the office 60-80% of the time (depending on role) and no WFH during the probationary period.

thaegumathteth · 08/05/2024 20:19

I'd say 2/3 days a week in the office. Dh works 3 days in the office and 2 at home most weeks but it depends a lot on workload / clients visiting etc.

I do 3 days at home and that's it but I'm nervous as it's a one year contract and I hope I can get similar again .

Fraggamama · 08/05/2024 20:30

2-3 days. Can be either 2 office/3 home or vice versa

darkchocolatecoffee · 08/05/2024 20:32

@GadgetDog I’m based in zone 2 london so hoping for a role somewhere central London based

@OddBoots oh yes! I had forgotten sometimes the policy is no WFH during probation period!

The big firms I have contact with, it is 2 in, 3 wfh.

SellFridges · 08/05/2024 20:34

I’d assume 2-3. It puts me off changing jobs though tbh. I’ve been doing a max of 3 days for the last 13 years, and average about 3 a month at the moment. None of my team are based in my office, so when I do go in I get caught up chatting to people who I know but don’t actually work with.

We are supposed to do 3, but I’d say less than 50% of people actually do that. It’d be hilarious if they enforced it because even if they put a rota in there are nowhere near enough desks for everyone, let alone capacity in the boiling water tap!

FrothyCothy · 08/05/2024 20:41

We also don’t have enough desks for everyone to be in even 2 days a week currently, employer gave up a second office base during Covid.

Looking around most places currently advertising seem to be at least 2 days a week in the office. I do a long commute at the moment which is manageable 1 day per week but the next move would have to either be much closer to home or a big pay increase to make 2+ days worthwhile.

Twilightstarbright · 08/05/2024 20:48

DH and I both work in Finance/Insurance in London. DH is mandated 3 days a week in the office but a lot of flex around train strikes, going to school plays etc.

No mandate at my company but an ‘expectation’ of 2-3 days a week in the office. I aim for 3 but it’s not an issue to do less.

Both quite senior and judged on output not hours (we work long hours!)

Walker1178 · 08/05/2024 22:01

We moved to 2 days a week last month and have been told it’ll up to 3 days in the office next April

Echobelly · 08/05/2024 22:05

I'd think 2-3 days. Jobhunting at the moment (sadly) and thus far most places have said either one or two days though; I do a job that doesn't really need to go in and I think often teams in my kind of role don't go in much.

InWalksBarberalla · 08/05/2024 22:10

1 or 2 days a month seems standard at my hybrid workplace.

TheChosenTwo · 08/05/2024 22:10

The policy where I work is 50% so alternating weeks it’s 2 days and then 3 days in the office and the rest at home.
However our local office closed and we were carted up to London and we are doing 1 day in the office and get half of the London weighting.
Getting a new local office in September and i can’t wait, home working 4 days a week is not for me! It’s been a long 18 months 🫠

LadyLapsang · 08/05/2024 22:30

If working 5 days pw, then usually a minimum of 3 days in the officer or external meetings, with SLT and juniors usually expected to be in 3/4, either to set a positive example or to learn from experienced colleagues. Staff with reasonable adjustments, usually a minimum of two, with some exceptions. Those with a home working contract, none.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 08/05/2024 23:39

My role is hybrid, but in a different city. In practise that means 3 days in the office and staying over the 2 nights in between. I drive there and back which is convenient.

rainbowsparkle28 · 08/05/2024 23:44

2-3 days per week although technically I am on a hybrid and mostly work from home with work visits perhaps a few times per week (2-3) for up to half day but go straight from home and back and then in office once per month average.
