Will I get in trouble?

So I work for my dad and uncle, as did my older brother. In 2019 my brother was speeding in a company vehicle doing 90mph in a 50mph zone (j live in the UK) and was caught by a camera. My brother had been banned previously and had racked up a further 9 points. I'm not sure if it was my brother or my dad but one of them told the DVLA that it was me driving so I received 6 points on my licence and a £900 fine (which I had to pay myself so I didn't get in further trouble). My question is will I get in trouble for this if I tell the police? I never agreed to it and I found out a few months after the offence and have known for nearly 5 years.

Why do you want to tell The Police now?

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 30/04/2024 13:56

It sounds like the actual crime was theirs, not yours because you didn't know, but whether you could potentially get in trouble for keeping it quiet for 5 years I don't know.

Don't see that it's in the public interest to prosecute you though and I don't know how anyone would find out now.

Janedoe82 · 30/04/2024 13:56

Presumably the points are spent now?
Crappy thing of them to do but what will you achieve by going to the police?

YouveGotAFastCar · 30/04/2024 13:56

It's perverting the course of justice; and as far as I'm aware, it often results in disqualification, and people have gone to prison for it. You'd presumably allege that someone else signed the forms in your name.

How did you pay the fine on time if you didn't know until a few months later?

Although this is despicable behaviour, I'd go NC with your Dad and brother but I wouldn't report this to the police.

ringoffiire · 30/04/2024 13:58

I would say tell them, if not for the fact that it was 5 years ago. Why did you wait so long and why do you want to bring it up now?

Why do you want to tell The Police now?

Because I received a fine in February this year for £900 relating to this offence and I was stuck paying it myself and my brother or dad won't pay me back

I only received the fine this year in February

The fact you accepted the points and paid the fine means they're unlikely to believe you weren't involved, unless you can demonstrate you were in a coercive control situation. Sorry, OP. I'd let it go now. And go NC with your relatives.

You only got the fine now for an offence in 2019?
Apologies If I am being a bit thick but did you agree you were the driver?

dreamfield · 30/04/2024 14:02

The point to say it wasn't you was when you received the fine.

Ponderingwindow · 30/04/2024 14:03

the timeline is very confusing.

how did you get a fine 5 years later?

why didn’t you protest when the fine arrived?

Bankholidayhelp · 30/04/2024 14:03

Are you sure they've not done it again? As 5 years is a long time for an outstanding speeding fine to be open. Personally I'd call their bluff and say you were going to write and say you weren't going to pay and that you had no knowledge of the event.

Did you know five years ago you’d have to pay the fine?

No idea why it came that late but I didn't protest it because I didn't want my brother getting in trouble but he's recently blocked my number because he owes me money related to a different matter and won't pay up so I think he deserves to take responsibility

I think you’ll be opening a can of worms.

Floralnomad · 30/04/2024 14:11

I think you will equally be in trouble as you obviously allowed it at the time .

Zanatdy · 30/04/2024 16:41

I really wouldn’t bother contacting the police - I get you’re angry with him but you’d be better off demanding he repay the fine money.

Allwelcone · 30/04/2024 20:28

I think you 'accepted' the rap in the eyes of the law.
Your issue sounds more brother related, sorry.
