Notice Period

Please help.

I am writing to address a discrepancy regarding the notice period for my resignation, which was discussed today verbally with my line manager.

As per my employment contract, it clearly states that I am required to provide one month of written notice. Accordingly, I am submitting my resignation on [today]April 30th, with the expectation that my last working day would be May 31st.
However, during our discussion, my line manager asserted that the notice period is four weeks, which would mean my last day of employment would be May 28th, contrary to what is stated in my contract. Also he insisted i send him my resignation as opposed to HR.

I would appreciate clarification on this matter, as it is crucial for me to understand and adhere to the correct terms outlined in my contract. If there have been any updates or adjustments to the notice period that I am unaware of, I kindly request that these be communicated to me promptly.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to resolving this discrepancy amicably.

I agree with you. A month is very different to four weeks.

I had to point this out to HR when they gave me a figure for a redundancy payout based on “four weeks”. I showed them that the contract said “month”, and so they had to adjust their figures and I was offered a higher payout.

Always follow the process that is in your contract.

Whatever is in your contract is correct.

You can give notice before the 28 days/1 month. If you know the date you want to leave just write a letter saying you are resigning and that your last working day will be XXXX.

1 month means a calendar month. 4 weeks is different.

Send the notice to HR and cc your manager in.

May I ask if I should send this query to the HR department despite the fact that it was the line manager who told me verbally this morning.

Manager insisted I send him the resignation letter, which I did. I have put 31st May as my last day. Could someone please verify my dates for me? Resignation date is today 30th April.

According to one calendar month, the 31st of May would be the last day? Is this correct?

Would it be appropriate to ask them to send me these four weeks' changes in writing?

I don't understand what you are querying. Whatever is in your contract is correct.

Email HR with your resignation and cc your manager. That way all bases are covered.

I would send your resignation to HR and cc your manager. HR will need to adjust your last working day to possibly account for any holiday due, to inform payroll and sort out your P45, none of which your manager will be able to do.

PickledPurplePickle · 30/04/2024 10:31

Follow your contract, send a copy of the letter to HR

Unexpectedconsequences · 30/04/2024 10:31

@msagile2605 I would contact HR and refer to your contract. I suspect your manager may have an ulterior motive e.g. budgets.

Please bear in mind that regardless of your notice period you clearly state that your last day is 31 May. There is nothing to prevent you giving more notice than required so 31 May is fine.
