If I'm an M6 and apply for a job elsewhere, is that M6 protected?

No, pay portability went a few years ago, unfortunately.

Sooooootired01 · 30/04/2024 08:15

@OggyBunsen I'm confused as I've been told there is pay "safeguarding"? Do you work in education?

Hello as far as I am aware you can’t move your pay grade over. You usually discuss it in an interview and negotiate what you would like to start on. E.g I have a friend who’s school was terrible at moving people up the scale and after 4 years of teaching was only on M2. When she came here she started on M5. You have every right to go to an interview and say I’m on M6 and due to move upto UPS for example. It just depends what they are looking for. They might be looking for cheap NQTs and might not want to pay someone on the upper scale.

Sooooootired01 · 30/04/2024 08:21

Thank you. 20 years qualified on M6 so no point even looking!!! 😞

Oh there's plenty of point looking, if you're good you can definitely use it to your advantage.

I know a couple of people who negotiated up points based on how good they were and their experience (late entering to profession)

M6 is a toughie though. Be honest and say you're in process of getting UPS. If the school really wants you, they'll pay

Sooooootired01 · 30/04/2024 10:37

@Bovrilla Thank you. But they are advertising as M1-M4 and no way I can drop that low (2.5 days p/w post). Absolutely gutted as loved the school and tick every box! 😞

Yes, I do. Deputy Head in Primary.

There is no pay safeguarding.

I wish teachers were paid centrally, maybe with schools having incentives for taking on ECTs, so schools could employ a balance of new & fresh with up-to-date ideas etc, and experienced.

Sooooootired01 · 30/04/2024 15:46

@OggyBunsen Thanks. I'm screwed, basically. No chance for me with 20 years' experience. I can't afford a drop in pay.
All schools are looking for is ECTs.
And we wonder why there is a retention crisis!

Are you primary? I rarely see secondary advertised as a thing there than full pay range.

BrutusMcDogface · 30/04/2024 21:24

I went from m6 to m5 when I started my job a few years ago, but went back up to m6 after s year. It used to be protected but now it isn’t, unfortunately.

Could you knock their socks off at interview, and ask to negotiate up?

BrutusMcDogface · 30/04/2024 21:25

After a* year

WonderingWanda · 30/04/2024 21:29

There's no portability anymore and lots of schools simply cannot afford the salaries so advertise lower. How are you not ups if you have 20 years experience?

WhiskersPete · 30/04/2024 21:33

How have you managed 20 years without going on UPS?

WGACA · 30/04/2024 21:37

WhiskersPete · 30/04/2024 21:33

I have too. I worked in private schools for many years and now refuse to go about M6 as I like to move jobs every few years and will be too expensive if UPS.

Sooooootired01 · 30/04/2024 23:06

@WhiskersPete 13 years in same school, 3 very spread out mat leaves, and part-time hours.
If I was UPS no other school would consider me in reality and I really want to move from where I am.
